i have been selling off my collection and keep finding stuff i forgot i had. when i was first collecting i got caught up in the pretty colors of toning when not really knowing what i am buying. i came across a morgan dollar in a box and i am on the fence with it. it kind of has features of both an AT and and NT coin. so any one's feedback would be greatly appreciated. i have not retouched the pictures at all(up the contrast, etc) i did move the coin so you got an idea of all the toning. :thumb: 1897 S
I think it's NT, but because it's a circ piece and the toning isn't what most would consider "premium quality", it doesn't really affect the coin's value.
the reverse looks like a lot of morgans i have seen before(slabbed and raw). that is why i was leaning towards NT. i was just curious because when i sell it i would have a disclaimer about not knowing the origin of the toning. that is could be AT or NT. thanks for all the feedback everyone
I really respect your opinion on this issue- what were your diagnostics? I thought NT because the devices (for example on the stars) differ from the fields
Looks alright to this old sod........Like the toning achieved in those old sulfur laden manila flips.
It has indicators of both AT & NT. As you pointed out, the fact that the toning doesn't creep over elevation changes such as the lettering and devices is a good indicator of NT. However, the color progressions which should be repeating yellow-magenta-cyan don't look right which would be an indicator of AT. Another problem is that the toning on the reverse looks like a secondary album toning after a dip. But the toning on the obverse is different, much different. In the end, the blue color that surrounds liberty's face and is in the recesses of the hair bothers me. It is not that I think someone deliberately artificially toned the coin, it is just that I think too much has happened to this coin to consider the color "market acceptable".
it's just going to be sold off just like all my morgans. when it does go up i will mention the toning is questionable.
Mention questionable in your ad and you'll be lucky to get melt. I like the coin for what it is and it could be NT.
