Acquired a couple really interesting Civil War Tokens/Store Cards a couple days ago. Here's what we have.

1863 Broas Pie Baker New York, NY - Shattered obverse die with a neat clash on the reverse, some mint red in the protected areas

1864 Great Central Fair Philadelphia, PA - Very immaculate olive brown surfaces with darker mottled areas

i am not used to there being nothing posted on this thread for almost entire day. got these the same time as my seated half a few post ago. the morgans bring up a question, i paid 26 a piece for them and decided to purchase the slicks that are kind of better dates (1903 s and 1894 o)then then vf/xf ones that were more common. what would you have chosen? and i picked up the mexican one oz because i've never owned one before and figured why not.

yep. i get home from work sit then look at what others bought. it is part of my routine and there was nothing today, not even conversation. thats why i asked what would you buy, slick morgans that are better dates or nice morgans that were common dates

 

Good question. I suppose since the slick ones are reduced to silver value, I would go with the nicer Morgans.

 

I like the smooth Morgans. I used to carry a few around in my pocket and show people what "change" once meant.

 

nicer ones were also the same price so therefore "reduced to silver value". i know i can always buy common morgans, but not everyday i can buy better date morgans for the "junk" price. i did the same with some walking halves i bought a while back. decent vf/xf examples were available but instead went with these (minus the 1938 d, i paid for that one but the others were whatever melt was at the time)

 

Give me the nicer ones, they will have numismatic value while the smooth ones will be just bullion/hole fillers.

 

not me which i proved by my actions. i just like the better dates. if i was trying to put a set together i would pay the extra for a nicer better date but right now most of my buying is for silver content. sure i technically loose a little weight to wear but when it does come time to sell most dealers i have dealt with just add up the face value no matter what the condition

I like buying higher grade Morgans, but just because they're easier on the eyes. An ms-64 1921, 1884-O, 1887, etc. are a dime a dozen, better dates with low mintage and low survival numbers are a much better investment IMHO. Just look at that 1916 Walker, worth $15 10 years ago, and only worth $15 today as opposed to all the other common walkers that were worth a couple bucks that just rode high with the bullion tide. Enjoyment is key, but if you're looking for a safe hedge against a down market, better dates are the way to go. I still like common MS junk though....
