WTH?! I always hold off buying these until the following year and it's already sold out. What gives?!
with almost 800k sets floating around out there, here's what to do.... wait for 1 year to let any hysteria die down, then purchase on ebay for around $25 or less, at a $6 discount to the US mint prices.
"Although the trend has been towards lower mintages for the past several years, this represents a significant step lower. The 2010 Proof Set had last reported sales of 1,103,950, followed by 1,098,284 for the 2011 Proof Set, which concluded sales on December 31. The last reported sales of 789,782 for the 2012 Proof Set is the lowest total since the 1956 Proof Set, which had sold 669,384 units."
In the Age of Discounting, there's no place for Beanie-Baby Hysteria in US collectibles now or tomorrow. I should also think poor 2012 sales for US Mint PMs broadly indicative of DETERIORATING TREND for the no-/low value "numismatic" moderns : same-same but different. So don't worry. You will almost certainly find it cheaper online in 2Q or 3Q 2013 (but there will also be internet taxes later in the year, I believe.)
I know they are less, but are the mintage numbers for the 2012 clad proof set significantly lower than previous years?
That's odd, last night they were listed as back ordered till mid January. I just returned a set last week and asked for a replacement. The quality was so shoddy, brown spots on the cent, scratches and smudges on some other coins. Maybe they wound up getting so many returns because of the quality that they ran out of sellable sets?
