    Waddaya think?

Just a die gouge or maybe a misplaced mintmark? I have found 4 of these out of a BU roll so it's definitely a die issue of some sort.

Wow! Could go either way. I see what could be remnants of most of a MM, pretty far off though.

1958 D is known for pretty dramatic RPM's for example THIS one is pretty significant as well.

That is true. Have you thought about posting it on lincolncentresource.com

There are some knowledgeable people over there and I think there is an expert on Lincoln cents that you can send it in to for verification and possibly be credited with finding a new variety.

I copied the D mintmark and placed it in the area you believe it could have been re-punched.
The first image is your original.
The second image is the copied D mark over the area at 15% opacity.
The third is at 30% opacity.
Seems you could make a case for this...

I'm thinking it os a coincidental die gouge to be honest. The shape just doesn't match what I would expect for an RPM way to the east. I would certainly like to see the outcome of this one, though.
