Hello . The mint mark S in this Morgan silver Dollar dated 1878 s seems to be repunched ( RPM ) . What do you say guys please . 7 Calbrey
Have you compared yours to the "short nock" list on VAMWorld? http://www.vamworld.com/1878-S+VAMs Chris
Thank you very much Chris . I have logged on to vamworld . But I am no expert. There were too many details for me to grasp . I shall send closer scans of the mint mark later . hope you follow this thread with me . Charles ( 7 Calbrey )
Morgan RPM Hello again . Here is a scan of a closer and clearer mintmark . I reviewed the Vamworld site and it appears to me as a VAM 63 s / s coin . What do you think ? Charles
Yes, it is. Have you tried cropping the photo so only the mintmark and a little of the surrounding field shows and then resize the photo? In order to determine if it is an RPM we need to see better detail of the mintmark. Chris
If I may be so bold; instead of saying there are too many details to grasp, why not at least try to "grasp" them and ask questions or for help when you're stuck? I well understand that trying to attribute VAMs can be tedious, especially with a date such as the 78-S, but Chris already narrowed it down by tell you this is the short nock variety, which cuts the work down quite a bit. You will learn more by throwing yourself into this than by asking others to attribute for you. I too would be more than happy to help when/if you run into trouble and/or have any specific questions. Seriously... at least give it a try.
On the obverse , the fourth star on the right side ( to viewer ) counting from down up , seems not to be broken or having only 5 visible or prominent points instead of six points . This could be an extra indicator . I got this information personally after deeply reviewing details of similar mintmarks on similar coins at VAMworld site . What do you say , if you please . Charles
The 4th star on the right with the broken point is a die marker for a lot of 1878 Morgans, not just San Francisco. You're just going to have to go through the VAM list one by one and compare all of the attributes of your coin to those that are listed. Chris
