I like to tell mine that I've got pennies worth hundreds of dollars each. That shut's them up! Ribbit
Not to worry Borgovan. I am too and I even took a photo of a coin tee I had made for a friend. You may know him?
We're all just a bunch of geeks !!! I met a guy at EAC who studied under Logan - the man who "literally wrote the book" on early American small silver. This dude is the one who pioneered "denticle counting". Yes, that's right... counting all those little denticles around the border - both sides ! Turns out there is MUCH to be learned there ! Anyway, after chatting for about an hour with this guy, I was mesmerized. Amazed. He could see I was really dialed in. I was "one of them". That's when he uttered the immortal phrase "We're all just a bunch of geeks !!!" :high5:
In the UK, geek is used, but occasionally anorak! I am a family man yet have been described as, not being gregarious. However, I look round at other people, apparently overwhelmed with things like celebrity worship and feel blessed that I have not the slightest interest in celebrity culture. All it tells you is that human beings are weak, even the wealthy ones, and that they make mistakes sometimes serious ones. So ordinary people who gawp at celebrities do so out of an insecurity that reflects a need to be part of some sort of herd, (that soon scatters when faced with the bitter taste of reality.) If they knew of the sense of personal satisfaction to be derived from needing only your own company over long periods of time, they'd all be doing it! It must be tough being shallow!
I don't think it would be fair to call coin collectors geeks or nerds because some of us don't coin collect full time, like gamer "nerds". I'm going with coin enthusiasts.
Frankly, "peep" carries the connotation (at least in my mind) of someone running around people's back yards at night and looking in windows. I'll stick with "geek".....
(nearly) A four year old thread resurrected Coingeek? And that HandsomeToad fellow? What the devil happened to him? Abducted by aliens? The poor fellow dropped out before the demise of the Mayan calender........ But I do have to agree with you. Geek not Peep........
I always thought that nerds worked for geeks. What's the difference between a nerd and a geek? A hundred grand a year! Oh well, that makes me a nerd.
Wait - which one is on the greater side of 100 grand? I'm definitely a coin geek! Wish I had a Franklin t-shirt...
I'll offer another option: Eccentric http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/eccentric Captures some of the qualities of "Geek" and/or "Nerd" and pulls in the nobility of the "Hobby of Kings". Eccentric.
