Last week, I posted some of the coins that were collected by my great grandfather. Here is one more that came out of his collection. This 1881-O Morgan dollar has probably sat in the manilla envelope I found it in for the last 60+ years. The strike is strong for the date, the cheek is pretty clean, the fields are nice and semi prooflike, the toning is wonderful (can't really get that in my pics, but there is a great crescent moon rainbow on the reverse), BUT......there is a minor rim ding on the reverse at 11 o'clock. Would this grade? If the rim ding was not there what do you think this would grade? PS...I am new to photographing silver coins, which I have found to be quite difficult.
Your images look way better than mine and I have been trying for fifteen years. As far as the coin, I love the color and see only a slight rub on the high pointw. AU-58
There are a lot of slide marks or potential "evidence of cleaning" question marks on the cheek and in the fields. Also, the gash across the eagle's breast won't help matters. If you're getting it professionally graded, I'm guessing AU details.
Im not going to grade it, I was just curious. I am going to be sending a batch of coins to NGC soon, but if this is AU or details, its not worth much more than melt.
The rim ding is extreme, and coupled with the scratches & scrapes also on the rev, I think it's almost certainly a details slab.
Rim ding plus two nasty scratches on the reverse--eagle's breast and fields. I agree with details--AU details sounds good. Shame, as it is a very pretty coin with the toning. There is nothing semi-prooflike in that picture--just an ordinary business strike common date Morgan with some nice toning and serious damage.
1880+1881 and the real hard date in Raw Au thru MS-63+ grades struck in New Orleans mint Doug & Morgan Dude are right on with opinion + there grading of this 1 1880-O. :thumb:
