So, I have 4 portugese guinea escudos bills, two are 100 escudos and two are 50 escudos, they are uncirculated and in mint condition, I was told secondhand that they book for $195 apiece in said condition, but you know how that goes. So, Does anybody here have a current market value for these?

My 2001 Catalog says $25 for the 50 and $35 for the 100 in UNC.

Looking at ebay, both appear to be in the $15-20 range.

thanks for the reply. I dont know why i was told they were worth so much. Supposedly that price came out of my great uncles price guide and he is a prominent coin dealer in tulsa. Odd

They are an example of something that was rare for a long time - most of the notes were never released into circulation initially - Portuguese Guinea became Equatorial Guinea in 1974 and the new country printed it's own notes eventually. These colonial notes sat in storage for a long time and were released into the collecting world much later on - which explains their initial rarity, but subsequent commonness. Similarly there are examples of Portuguese colonial coins from their African colonies that were very rare in BU - then a bunch of them hit the market about 5 years ago - it is now possible to find Angolan and some Mozambique coins for a fraction of their initial catalogue values.
