Never seen anything like this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1878-7TF-Mo...57?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item1e75d10f8d
Me too. What kind of condition would cause this? I've seen a lot of bullseye toning, but never neon blue almost all the way around.
The untoned areas at 2 & 3 o'clock make me think EOR toning, but that is a pure guess. I also think this is a secondary toning and that the coin was lightly cleaned or dipped prior to being toned. It is a cool looking coin.
I am definitely a fan of the blues, especially the darker blue on her headdress, but I don't like how much the non-blue toning masks the luster.
I'm not a big fan of the layout of the color, and I don't see how PCGS could give it a 62. It looks like a slider to me. Chris
That's the first thing I was thinking as well. It's like it got toned but then went out for some circulation time before heading to the slabbery.
Ooo I love blue Morgans. Shane has a few on ebay from time to time a few of which Morgandude outbid me on There are some similar ones out there for sure. I have one...but one probably isn't enough
I got this one from Shane a couple years ago. He sent me photos of three new acquisitions which were headed for eBay, this being one of them. I called Shane immediately and made him an offer for all three which he accepted. I don't want to tell you what it cost because I'd hate to see a grown man cry. Chris
EOR was my first thought too. To me it looks like the obverse was thumbed (in the holder/roll) prior to the toning. If someone had rubbed/handled the coin in that fashion it would explain why the high-points of the device and the center of the fields didn't tone like the rest of the obv. Also, it explains why the toning continued in the recessed sections of the obverse device, because those sections wouldn't have been reached by light handling/rubbing. That mark at the base of Liberty's neck also looks like a small section of fingerprint. Interesting coin, Detecto are you going to be bidding on it?
Its all the way around the coin. Like someone Q tipped with some chemical. I dont trust any strongly toned coins. Not even the slabbed ones.
To me, it looks like it was very harshly cleaned on the obverse. Why else would the toning be in the recesses of the coin and not all over? Also, it really looks lifeless and dull on the obverse. It's a shame really, that would have been a beautiful blue coin.
The seller had this coin on BIN for $220 a few weeks ago. It didn't sell on a BIN so he decided to sell it through an auction. I guess many buyers were either scared or turned off by the toning since it looks a bit fishy. JMO.
