I just got a 2003 Sac from a coin machine. It's not even close to being an AU/BU. However! Can anyone tell me if the 2003's where every released for circulation? Unless I'm mistaken I thought 2000 and 2001 where the only years released for circulation so far. Thanks.
Answered My Own Question I found what I was looking for and I was right. 2000 and 2001 are the only years this coin has been released for circulation. This makes the second SAC that I have found not released for circulation. The first one was a 2004 I found seaching dollar roles for SBA Near Dates. Yes I know it is only worth a dollar, but my payment is finding the unexpected. Makes you wonder how it found it's way to the bank. I just hope it's not an outcome of a theft.
I can think of two ways for them to get into circulation. One, a collector orders a few from somewhere and then finds one that's scratched up. He doesn't want it for his collection in that state and doesn't want to stick anyone else with a dog. Even the Sacagaweas that weren't released to circulation aren't going for that much so one that's scratched isn't going to have much value. The next time his seven year old losses a tooth she gets a bright shiny gold dollar and promptly spends it one a pack of gum next trip to WalMart. Two, couple a goofball kid and a someone who leaves some of their less expensive coins somewhere easily accessible and the kid wants a snickers and a pepsi (or pack of cigarettes) down at the corner gas station.
There was a collector who died early this year---he was a member here at Cointalk and other places...his name was Catman----every year he would buy from the mint a bag of Half Dollars and a bag of Dollars----he would first offer to anyone on the forum to send him $1 for $1 worth of new coins---after everyone had gotten what they needed he spent the rest----he always wanted the new coins in change even if it meant him spending alittle extra just to get them. Speedy
Thanks for that Speedy. I have to say Catman really had a good heart/soul, eventhough I didn't know him. Also to me he is the kind of coin collector that I would have liked to have known. When I can make coin club meetings I will go by the bank and get rolls of new coin to trade at face value to anyone who wants them. It tickles me how many members want the coins. I always tell them where I get them, but I guess they must not make trips to look for new coin at banks. So many people are out for make a buck that they over look the real profit of giving.
Yes it was a great guy!....I never met him face to face but we talked a good bit by email---he was one of the first people I met when I joined my first Coin Forum---he was a collector who collected what he liked. You can find a good many posts by him on this forum! Speedy
