Appears to be some kind of token, not a coin. May have something to do with King William III of England.
Struggling. The obverse reminds me a lot of the "Cumberland Jack" gaming tokens made in England in the mid 19th Century - they lampooned the sending of the Duke of Cumberland to Germany to become Elector of Hannover - which was unpopular in Britain at the time. They did make many similar tokens at the time, including ones complaining of over taxation - so it may be out of that series. The 1688-1690 date could be for William III of England - but although he came in in 1688, he reigned until 1702, so I can't see why it would end in 1690. James II is another possibility - he was kicked out in 1688, but continued to fight in Ireland to regain his crown until defeated at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, so it may be to do with that. The shield on the reverse though does not correspond to either of these kings - so we are back to square one! Is it possible to get a larger picture of both sides? At present even enlarged I can make out little detail.
This is the best I can do for now. When I get a better pic I will post it. The lower left box on the reverse shield has some letters or numbers but my magnifying glass is not powerful enough to read. Thanks for your help thus far.
I have one of these coins too and have no idea what it is. Have you had any luck identifying the coin other than the replies you have here on cointalk? I have scoured the internet and yours is the only other I have found. I'm wondering if it is a token of some sort? My husband and I merged collections and this coin was in his items. We live in Nova Scotia, Canada. His great grandfather fought in WWI in Germany and might have brounght back the coin then with couple of Belgian and French coins we have too. I mentioned where I live because the geographic location of our coins may be a clue in identifying. Look forward to hearing from you.
This Worthpoint entry says it is a c. 1890 Orange Order William III piece... http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/c1890-orange-order-token-holed-bronze-1688-1690
Thanks for the inquiry, I have internet access only at the library and don't come hear often. The member above identified it as an Orange Order token and I doubt it is worth much.
I also have one of these tokens but when I check on worthpoint it does not say how much it sold for. Anyone know what it's worth?
