I am new to the world of coin collecting and have only been doing so for about a year now.I acquired this quarter a few months ago, purchasing it drom a local dealer as a coin for my type set. He sold it as an x/f. What do you guys think? Should it be graded and slabbed?
Hi silvered. The details are nice, and I agree with XF. However, based on those images, this coin has been harshly cleaned. It would receive a details grade if you submitted it. Welcome to CT! -greg
Even though it's cleaned, I like it! 160 year old coins don't escape cleanings that often. I have the same quarter, but mine would only grade "good". Arrows & Rays! :thumb:
Welcome to the forum! Since you say you are a relatively new collector, let me explain the harshly cleaned comments. Many early coins were cleaned as the emphasis was on type and date rather than condition, so abrasive scrubbing of the coin to remove corrosion was practiced. The last half century or more, especially with third party grading, has raised condition effect tremendously. the cleaning is easily noticed in the photo due to the angle of light about Liberty's knees revealing multiple fine scratches all running in the same direction. I guess you do learn something new every day, I did not know that they did not place as much emphasis on cndition until relatively recently.
Yes, to reiterate what was said above, it was not intended to be a negative against the coin--the custom about 50-75 years ago was to clean coins. This can severely cause damage to the surface of the coin, and Third Party Graders won't put it in any slab that doesn't say "cleaned---details(condition)." The gritty surface, and shininess with a lack of luster indicated a harsh cleaning. Still a nice coin.
Thanks for the great comments, I am taking away nothing from this except a positive expirence.Besides this is my favorite coin.
That's great to hear! It shows off the beauty of the design and a nice example. Cleaned or not. I have plenty of cleaned, damaged, and other "problem" coins. Doesn't bother me a bit.
