I am new to this site and have found alot of great information on it. I am hoping that someone can tell me if this is a true double die 1972 penny. I looked through the lincoln cent resource and there are 9 different doublings. I think that this one could be number 4 or 6 on the site, under 1972 double die. There is notching on the 1 and on the date as well as liberty, and in, and we. The doubling is sudtle, but the description on the lincon cent website depicts the same quality. I'm working on better quality pictures. Any advice on how to scan and upload better pictures would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I don't think so but welcome to CT check out this site note where the info on this page link says .... "There over 9 different double die obverses known for this year. DDO 2 shows the second most doubling and it, and the other DDO's for this year, can be mistaken for DDO 1. Do not confuse these, because DDO 1 is worth considerably more." As far as posting better images, make larger images and work with them in a photo program and make them a reasonable size to and save them someplace, like your desktop to upload with the INSERT IMAGE icon above your post you are making that looks like this.
I still cant get a good photo of a coin overall but i have had luck getting closeup shots of something like this by using a loupe under the camera lens and using macro mode. Get enough lights around the coin aimed under the lens. I have an I-phone and have had some good luck attaching my loupe to the phone with an elastic band. Just gotta play around. Good Luck & Welcome!
Welcome to CT penny39! Here's a link to Wexler's list of Lincoln's, with an extensive list of the ddo and ddr's for the 72 http://www.doubleddie.com/300201.html You can find die markers to help identify which one you may have-good luck to you, but it's a great year (my favorite) to get experience on doubled dies! You are on the right track with taking pics, and it takes some experimenting to get the distance right as well as angle. First, you may be able to post better ones simply by cropping and editing your existing pics to show key areas. If not, you are already right by setting your camera on macro, and put the loupe to the lense starting from several inches back from the coin. Once you get sharp images, do your editing and zoom in and crop to show key die marker areas. Auto focus will kick in so you may have to adjust distance several times, but eventually you will find the right combination. Also, it helps if you have something under the coin to raise it but won't be visible to the camera lense and throw off focus-I use a golf tee in a wood block-just drill a hole in a scrap piece of a 2x4 and insert the tee or like object. This isolates it in the view as well as brings it closer to the lense. I also have an adjustable gooseneck lamp that can be tilted to light the coin on the golf tee so I can get appropriate light and have one more hand free. All of that takes minutes to set up, but makes for clear, easy pics that you don't have to stand on your head to take (been there, done that lol!). Here is the link to some I took of one of my favorite 72 Lincoln's http://html5-player.libsyn.com/embe...umbnail/yes/destination_id/77517#.UOEJiyRZ7HU Good luck to you-hope you can post some new pics soon!
Thank you all, I am going to take better pictures using the loupe I got for christmans. I will repost tonight. Penny
