Found this nickel in my change and I'm not sure exactly what is going on here so I'd appreciate some input from some of the more knowledgeable error coin enthusiasts. A significant portion of the 'O' in "O! The Joy" text is missing. I know for sure that this is not caused by any sort of damage or wear when viewing under magnification. In the proper light there is a very, very, very week outline of the missing piece of the 'O' on the right sight. But what's more interesting to me is how immediate and crisp the upper edge of the missing piece in 'O' is. I've been researching error strikes and all I could come up with is a potential strike through grease, but this isn't quite like the other examples I've seen. Thanks in advance for the insight!
Your photo isn't the clearest, but I have to ask what power magnification did you use to examine it? Many people don't realize how easy it is to move metal around on a coin, and one that has been in circulation could have had most anything happen to it. It wouldn't take much of a hit to scrape that part of the letter right off. You would want the magnification to be high enough so that you can examine the gap (only!) and look for any possible traces of a scrape or scratch. Chris
When you do as Chris mentions, you will see that part of the "!" near the bottom dot, and even a little on the vertical bar of the "T", all in a straight line. Damage. Jim
Did you say press through greese? I thought these were worth tons!!! I have even saved them for 7 years!!! Ah the learning continues....
