I was reading the membership packet that came from PCGS and more specifically the policies. It states that if anyone cracks out a PCGS coin, that the certification label must be returned to PCGS, as once a coin is removed from the holder, the label automatically becomes PCGS property. Just an FYI...
..... and then reality hits and no one cares. They used to offer a "bounty" on cracked labels (50 cents IIRC) which was almost as stupid as expecting people to return at their own expense.
I have returned a few labels of coins with small populations because I didn't want the population to go up when the coin was resubmitted.
Definitely makes sense.... I'm not an expert in this sort of thing, but couldn't they just request you communicate it to them and then provide proof you destroyed the label?
As have I, but generally speaking, the whole idea of returning labels is a bit much for most coins, especially without the "big time" bounty, but with coins of a small population, it is in the owners best interest to do so. I presently have an LS50C with a total listed pop of 5, and found out a past owner who resubmitted it tossed out the labels... two of them. Makes a big difference.
I completely agree, for a common coin with a huge population, it really doesn't serve much purpose to return the labels. For your half, the previous owner doubled the population significantly reducing its value and desirability. If I understand correctly, the secure plus coins are imaged and put into a database to avoid this from happening anymore.
Actually, this one coin now represents at least 60% of the total pop, but who is counting You brought up an excellent point though.
Well, I went to night school so perhaps my math isn't valid during daylight hours, but I understand how a single coin could be 100%, 50%, 33-1/3%, etc. of the population, but not how it could be 60%.
Well, I am not a member of PCGS, and I never agreed to their rules when I bought my coin. If they wanted their label, they shouldn't have put it in a crappy piece of plastic and wrapped it around my coin. However, if they send a representative to my house, I will return it to them. Until then, I will remain a label fugitive. Come get it PCGS!
One coin submitted 3 times and two more coins submitted once would make the coin submitted 3 times 3/5 of the population or 60%
If they were serious about their population counts, they should make it possible to submit this information online. If the coin is registered to an owner's account, that owner should be able to email them and let them know a coin has been removed from the holder, submit the cert # and have the population reduced. Just a thought. I have a couple of certs that I will include with my next package submission. We'll see if it lowers the population numbers.
i have cracked tons of slabs. the can come get the labels if they want. they will have to find them first :thumb:
Mine are on the workbench in the garage I think... They can have 'em if they give me a discount on submitting a few coins
They'll have to dig through my local landfill to retrieve mine. Maybe they need to make labels in the Get Smart fashion...as soon as they are released from their plastic, they incinerate themselves. Problem solved. Guy
Not sure about PCGS labels, but when i crack NGC slabs, i make paper airplanes...The hologram on the brown part really shines with a rainbow effect.
