It's not strange at all, most British coins have no denomination on them. That one for example, the crown, half crown, shilling, and six pence, all have very similar designs. people knew what denomination it was because of the size of the coin. In some cases there were slightly different designs on the different denominations, but you'd never see them in a quick glance as you spent the coins. You knew what the coin was worth by how big, or how small it was.
