We have had something similar in Northern Indiana, except that the person drops in a gold US coin from the 1920s or so. It is a noble thing to do, but it pains me to think of the disgusting nickels and pennies being dropped on top of the gold coin and putting marks on it.

I hear what you’re saying. But then, what does it say about us as a society when someone exhibits integrity? We’re amazed they didn’t steal from the poor? Surely, if one believes there is a heaven & hel*, stealing from the poor will ensure ones internment in the later. Or, if you don't believe, man's law just may put you away for awhile.
