Yes, and the seller discloses such in his listing. He is a well known peddler of AT coins on E-Bay. PS: Nice Avatar!
Did you happen to look at all of the coins below that this seller has? They all look almost the same. In the case of this Kennedy, I would have to ask, "Does a bear (xxxx) in the woods?" Chris
Because those colors are not consistent with what is accepted in the market as natural toning. All of the sellers items bear a very similar toning pattern and color scheme, and he admits that the coin is AT. I am not sure what else you need.
If I thought your avatar was AT, I would have included that information in the E-Bay listing, like I did with this one.
Actually, I had a strong suspicion about the coin I posted, but I didn't notice the "AT" in the seller's description until you guys pointed it out. The reason I asked was not to avoid the coin, but rather to acquire it, so that I had an AT coin in hand for educational purposes. I've visited a few coin shops over the last week and looked at a lot of toned silver with huge premiums, and I really have NO idea what to look for by way of differentiating between AT and NT. I'm hoping a close examination of an AT coin will be a good learning experience...
I wasn't trying to do anything, honest. I just really don't know the difference between one and another. Apologies again.
Yes it is AT. The seller directly states it, and it is done by electroplating. This is a very common form of AT.
Don't worry bro, I wasn't mad. I just had visions of you showing me a photo of the slab had I responded yes to your question. You should bear in mind that just because a coin resides in TPG plastic, it does not mean the coin is not AT. Btw, I have no problem if you want to use that coin as your avatar, free advertising for me.
OK, thanks Lehigh. If someone asks me about it, I'll know where to send them. As regards to the Silver Eagles, "Questionable Toning" ???? Ok, lol. Even an idiot like me can tell somebody just painted that with watercolors.
I applaud your pursuit to educate yourself on learning the difference between AT and NT. However, any of the coins from this seller probably aren't going to help much. I say this because these are so obviously AT'ed, even in hand, it won't benefit you. There is nothing natural about them to try and compare. These extreme "crayola" colors are a dead give away. Keep in mind, trying to decide between AT and NT is not a perfect art form. Even the TPG's get it wrong. My suggestion is to first decide what type of coin you are interested in regarding toners. Each type will have there own common types of colors and patterns. That's not to say some naturally toned coins aren't very unique. The composition of the coin also is a factor in toning. Silver will obviously react and tone differently than clad or copper, etc.. Then I would start to look at graded toned coins. Although the tpg's aren't always right, it certainly will give you a better idea of what is considered "market acceptable . Here is a good place to look. Check out Krypto's sales and you will see a lot of toned coins to compare. http://www.ebay.com/sch/kryptonitec...h=item4abf8bc06b&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562 That's a start. No one can tell you exactly how to tell the difference between AT and NT with complete accuracy. Experience and education will certainly provide education though. There are certain things to look for, like how the color lays on the coin, the creeping on elevation changes, etc.. But if you are shopping on ebay or online, generally that ammo won't help you make a decision. Another you need to think about is: What caused that type of toning? bag toning, mint set, roll toning, old album toning, etc.. On the other side of the fence, you can look at known AT sellers listing and start noticing the similarities and what to look out for. I will gladly send you a list of ebay sellers who sell all AT coins, none of whom mention that in their listings. -g
The scary part about that coin was that it resided in a PCI slab labeled QT. Then it was cracked out and sent to PCGS who decided to grade the coin. IIRC, the slabbing of that coin pre-dated the GENUINE service by PCGS. PS. When that Kennedy sells, you might want to change you avatar
Will do. Thank you for taking the time to help me out. If you'd like to PM me that list of AT sellers, I'd be most appreciative.
