I would go XF when possible, but there is nothing wrong with filling holes so long as the price is appropriate.
Here is my decision. After looking at capped bust halves in higher grades, I don't see much of an improvement in appearance. The F-12 and above grades look fine to me. What I am going to focus on is capped bust halves with good appearance. Something like this is a bad appearance. Whereas something like this is great (to me).
Detecto, this is a hobby. That means, it's a leisure activity. That means, you're supposed to get some personal reward out of this. That means, these answers are within yourself. That means, looking for these answers from others, you're missing the boat.
Bust halves aren't junk silver IMO - I could never see them that way. So having a handful of them in low grades was never terribly satisfying. I eventually sold a number of so-so pieces and upgraded to one in XF, like you posted. It was the right decision. Junk silver is fun to have, but it can be Walkers and Franklins...
It's been discussed many times but I'd always go for quality over quantity. The longer you collect, the more you realize how much "average" stuff is in the market. To me the average stuff is pretty boring. I'd much rather have a few super nice coins than a shoebox full of average. As my collection stands now, I have a mix and it's become too much labor to unload the average, common stuff. I'm seriously burned out on selling and I have a LOT more to get rid of to achieve my ultimate goal of a "reasonable" amount of exceptional coins. I think it's going to take me another 10 years to "rebalance" my collection. I just wish I would have never bought all the common stuff I have. So, my vote is strongly in favor of QUALITY.
From what I have seen quality should always come before quantity for a collector but to each his own. If I were you I'd possibly upgrade especially if you have some dupes. In any case you have some great coins no matter what Detecto.
This is truly a great post; I could not have written it better myself. It really does capture the essence of who makes up the market from the speculator to the dedicated enthusiast
I choose quality over quantity. Though I do pick up when I can get a decent price on a coin. But lately I've been selling my lower grade coins and junk silver to save and buy what I really want. By the time my daughter is an adult, I'd like to have attained a nice quality coin collection.
Detecto, Could you post the four halves in this thread and give an idea of what you expect you could sell them for
