  3. I am guessing that NGC assigned a grade of MS66. Nice coin. TC

Maybe a question like guess the assigned grade and what grade would you give it?

I know you said your grade, I just want the poll to be accurate, please vote, please!

Looks 65 to me - even with Doug"s prognostication!

I didn't vote because I have no idea what they graded it Paul. It could be anywhere from what I think it should be graded, 58, to 65. If I had a pic of the slab, maybe I would hazard a guess based on that. Since I don't, I won't.

Besides, why does it matter what I think ?

Has anyone ever thought that maybe it's not the TPGs getting "looser" over time, but maybe Doug's eyes getting poorer? ;)

Paul, it's a very nice coin. I voted MS64, as the gouge in the cheek is quite long, and there seems to be a bit too much chatter in the fields around the eagle on the reverse to be higher. I wouldn't be surprised to see it in a holder anywhere from MS63-MS66 though. I think there's almost zero chance it's in an AU58 holder...and just to clarify, I also think that from those pictures that it is truly UNC (despite the unjustified musings of Doug).

I voted 63 but i should mention that is what i would grade it but cant take my vote back... probably got a 64+ from a TPG... wouldnt be suprised if it is labled a FH.

Okay guys, it has been 24 hours so here comes the grade and the bonus. The coin is on it's way to NGC so if you got the answer wrong, you get a second bite at the apple.

I don't see anything on this coin that I haven't seen on other SLQ's that are graded as mint state coins by NGC. So I figured I would gamble $25 on grading fees to try and get an upgrade.

    Isn't this fun?:D

No matter, it was a very nice looking coin.

Either those pictures massively misrepresent the coin or NGC was sleeping when they graded this coin. Best of luck on your resubmission.

So Doug was right! See why he's the administrator. Not to say it won't come back as a MS coin...

I just thought he was the administrator because he's been around since the first computing machines of Babbage?

IMO, those photos are some of the best I have ever shot. The photo is an excellent representation of the in-hand appearance of the coin. It is not hiding the flatness on the leg or making it appear less severe. I studied this coin for many hours on many different occasions before simply coming to the conclusion that NGC did not grade this coin according to their standards. The flatness on the leg has a silver appearance which typically means that the TPG will accept as strike weakness or roll friction as opposed to wear which typically appears dull and grey.

The fact that I have cracked it out and resubmitted it raw should tell the members of this forum how sure I am that it is a mint state coin. I thought Doug would be proud of me. After all, he is the one who says I never disagree with a TPG grade.

I would like to wish everyone good luck with the resubmission grade. And although I am rooting for the four guys who said MS66, I think the marks on the head and eagle's breast along with the disturbance in the right obverse field will preclude a gem grade and I predict MS64. Honestly, I am much more worried about the other coins that I submitted along with this coin.

    Leadfoot there is no spoon

I'd take a roll of 58s that look like that tomorrow.

    Good luck on the re-grade.

Paul, I wish you well. You've the coin 'in hand'. Many hours of studying on your part will most likely yield a mint state example. Still.......I'm seein' a '58 coin. Luck of the draw however.......I remember that thread about AU-63 that you posted back a few years ago....

And if it does what does that tell us ? Better yet, what does it tell you if it doesn't ?

Either way, it tells me that grading is subjective and that even within the TPG's there is a divide about what separates AU from MS.
