Coin from every country

    I can't do it either.

I had reserved a couple Dansco albums to house one 20th Century coin per country. The coins in those albums get upgraded from time to time. Here are some previous CT thread links where several CT folks discuss their World coin storage:

Today I personally use mostly ½” 3-ring binders with 20-pocket archival pages. The binders are labeled A-B, B-C, D-F, etc. I still end up with oodles of World coin material in double-row boxes. :(

I suspect you bought them all. Guess how many 1912-S I bought in mint state when I was collecting V-nickels.

That is a really nice list. I don't see Biafra or Ajman in the list. Of course, they are gone today.

P.S. The beauty is that everyone can make their own list. I made my own list that includes places like the Weimar Republic & GDR but does not include states or coins that are not actually struck for circulation. My list only includes 216 places I think. I don't own coins from a few of them but they remain on my want list.

Nice problem to have now, huh? Only extras in V nickels I have are a bunch of 12d's I got in a pile of crud.

Well, it was a trick question. I didn't bid on one so I bought 11. :) Cool coins, I think some collectors just overlooked. I am happy to be the proud daddy of each of them. "Normal" collectors would have just bought one of the type, but I have found over the years to buy what is available, since you may not see another in ancient coins for another decade.

If anyone is really burning up wishing to own a kushanshah coin from Peroz with the standing emperor, let me know. I have a few I might trade with, not sell, but trade. :)

    I agree with you collect89.
I think soon buy a coin of Biafra but is a bit expensive.

I do believe I have all of them.

If you really want to go overboard on one per country you need to check out the one per country collectors group on Yahoo. We have a checklist of all the coin issuing countries/governing authorities going back to about 1400. The Excel checklist is over 7000 lines long

Thats awesome Conder101, how long did it take to complete the set? Which coin is your favorite of them?

Including or excluding the ones that only issue NCLT and the ones that nobody recognizes as a country?

This thread got me curious, so I checked out my One Per Regime collection -

Not counting several as yet unsorted world junk tray acquisitions that may have more, I found coins from 209 distinct geographic areas, among 431 total coins. None are from places like American Samoa which only issue NCLT, and none are from imaginary countries like Sealand.

The oldest is a 1628* Japanese cast bronze 1 mon representing the period when Japan was ruled by the Shogunate, and the newest is a 2008 Japanese bronze 10 yen representing the reign of Heisei Emperor Akihito.

Oceana, and every continent except Antarctica are respresented. Alphabetically the coins are from Afghanistan through Zimbabwe, which are the first and last countries represented in the 20th/21st Century Krause catalogs.

In the 17th Century the German State of Aachen headed the list, and the Dutch State of Zwolle brought up the rear.
Aachen remained at the head of the list in the 18th Century, but the Swiss Canton of Zurich took over last place.
Afghanistan took its place on top of the list in the 19th Century, and has retained it ever since. Zanzibar was the 19th Century tail-end Charlie, and Zimbabwe took its place during the 20th Century as the modern name for what had been the British Colony of Southern Rhodesia.

*I do have a few ancients, but they aren't cataloged in the OPR collection.

I believe there's a Cointalk member who holds the Guiness Book or World Records for the most coins in a single personal collection. Can't remember his username at the moment.

Personally, I have about 24,000 +/- modern world coins non of which are doubles and very few NCLTs. With that said, only a few are rare or worth more than $100. Most are low cost or foreign bin finds.

While your doing your coin from every country you might want to build a birth year set of coins from around the globe.

As others have said, one of the greatest things about doing a collection like this is the geographic and historical knowledge you pick up. If my son, (currently 15 months), has the coin bug at all I am strongly encouraging him to do a coins of the world collection. All of the knowledge he would learn would last him a lifetime. That in itself is more than worth the cost of the collection.
