So you are walking through a coin shop, and there are two common coins sitting there for exactly the same price. One is an NGC graded MS63 1921 Morgan, and the other is an NGC graded MS69 1991 Silver Eagle.

If you had to buy one, which would you choose and why?

    Neither

Only because I'm holding out on a higher graded 1921 Morgan. MS-65 minimum. And, I am not an SE collector, yet. ;)

The 1921. MS-69 Silver eagles are a dime a dozen...

Both coins are really dime in a dozen....and the Morgan would be easy to find in a higher grade----so I would go ASE...unless the Morgan dollar had some cool toning or a cool VAM.

not in a big way---but my dealer could care less about such things so I normaly look through his Morgans for such things as large die cracks...doubling of stars or numbers or such....and such things...he doesn't care that I do that and when I have the time its fun.
He used to be a collector but hasn't done it for years and so varieties and such are just things that he doesn't care that much about---so in that way its pretty easy to cherry-pick---now his grading is something else--we only agree part of the time---he has a IHC right now that he grades VF....I think it would make F12 just because of LIBERTY being on the head...but its weak....I'm thinking about seeing if he will send it to NGC--I'll pay for the grading if it comes back VF and he pays if it comes back lower :D :D

That's the way I am as well. I only look for the obvious and then check it out after I get it home.

I would take the Morgan dollar. It is entirely possible that it might be a Top 100 or a Hot 50 Vam. Besides, Morgan dollars are beautiful by themselves.

I guess I should have specified that if you don't choose, you lose your money anyway. :)

I would take the MS69 1991 Silver Eagle. I'd pop it out of the holder and send it back in and hope for an MS70.

I think I would take the silver eagle too because it is a large and beautiful coin. It's a tough call and pretty equal in my mind. That's why I thought I'd ask.

    HI!

My name is David Benus and I'm from Hungary - middle Europe. Excuse me, my english is not so good, but I have a question for you. Yesterday I got a simple Morgan dollar, and I'm not sure, that it is really original. After the cleaning... it became almost uncirculated dollar, and I don't really think this coin is 121 years old. I found some websites about Morgans. In this site... http://www.coinpage.com/Morgan%20Dollar-coin-pictures.html ... I compared 1885 dollars to my one, and it is similar.. more.. same. But in this page... http://www.coinresource.com/news/news2005/pcgs_declares_counterfeits.htm ... I read something about little scratches next to the left wing of the eagle... The coin got similar signs, but this is not "micro o" dollar. Other pages I found something about fake china-made morgan dollars.
Well, I would like to ask for your help, how can I decide that my Morgan is original.
By the way.. the parameters of the coin is original (weight, diameter, etc.) and I'm sure it is real silver (one of my friend carried out a silver probe by something acid, and it prooved silver). I bought this coin 3500 Ft (it is about 17$ in Hungary) but who sold it is not a professional in foreign coins, just in old hungarian money.
If somebody like answer to my question I could send some high resolution pictures my Morgan in e-mail.

Thank you very much indeed for your help!

your coin appears to be genuine to me David. The $17 price is an ok price for that coin, so I think you are ok. I probably wouldn't have cleaned it, but to each his own.

    Hi The_Cave_Troll!

Thank you very much for your quick reply!
I think I'm going to collect Morgan Dollars. It's not an easy way here in Hungary... that's why interesting.
Could you tell me something about how can I make difference between fake and genuine Morgan Dollars, or where can I find some insturctions in internet about it?
    Are there any main differences?

    Thanks :)

    Uralwolf,

Welcome! and I use the Red Book's guide to Morgan Dollars. I'm not saying you need to buy it from Amazon, but that is a decent price. However, shipping might hurt you.

    Again, WELCOME!

Howdy uralwolf - Welcome to the Forum !!

If you care to take the time to do the research there is plenty about Morgan dollars available on the internet. I would suggest that you start searching here - Coin Resources Among the links listed there you will find information on how to grade Morgans, mintages, different varieties, available dates & mints and yes counterfeits and how to distinguish them from genuine coins.

Of course any time you have a question that you cannot find the answer to - just post your question here on the forum and someone will likely be able to help you ;)
