I just bought a token on eBay for my wife (Xmas). It's not particularly expensive (<$50) but is in her area of interest (sewing). I don't have it yet but I think a bit of work will have to be done on it. The toning doesn't bother me but there is a small area of what appears to be verdigris. Will a copper dip remove it? Or will I need something more?
A copper dip NO!. You might try Verdicare, but I would try Xylol or acetone first just in case it is something simpler the verdigris. (Too many people jump to the conclusion that anything on a copper coin must be vergiris, included simple green gunk from dirt and skin oils.)
Without the coin in hand I can't be sure, but it looked crusty in the image. That's why I thought verdigris.
Got it today. It's bronze and more properly a medal (award) rather than a token. Larger than I expected mostly because even though the description said 3" I didn't really process that info. There are two smallish areas of green which I still think are verdigris. But whatever, the nice brown patina says to me "Don't do anything". So, if the green areas don't grow it'll stay as is. It's sort of sewing related and a Xmas gift for my wife. There's a stand coming for it. Now I can understand why many people like medals.
I'd love to see a pic if it . Verdicare is a pretty safe product . I bought a slabbed Monitor token that had 3 spots of verdigris . After following directions I rinsed it with distilled water and the token looks exactly the same color and texture as before .
