I sold off a collection of US Broken Bank Notes last year. I was interested in Indians used on the note.
Obsoletes were among some of my favorites as well. I had a fairly simple collection and sold them at the 2011 FUN Show....this is the only one I kept out of the bunch.... Thanks for posting...the engravings are considerable, beautiful and truly hand cut works of art!
Restrike from original plate. These were never actually printed and used due to the outbreak of the civil war. I just completed this set. These train fare notes were used as currency along the 191 mile route of the railroad, although it wasn't really a legal currency. My interest in them was due to it being local to the city I live in, as well as liking the vignettes. It was merged with other small railway systems prior to it being sold to Southern Railway on July 10, 1894. After the acquisition in 1894, the Charlotte, Columbia and Augusta name was dropped and the Southern Railway name was used. The 1 dollar note was the toughest one to find and was the only example I could locate anywhere. Printed by the American Banknote Company. I really like the beauty of the old obsolete notes! So many to choose from!
It really is! I can go on Ebay and other sites & spend a lot of time just looking at the designs on the obsoletes.
Wow! I got a freakin' steal on one of these from a Lyn Knight auction just recently. Going to mail my payment tomorrow - hopefully I'll get it soon after that.
Back from a Christmas visit and just saw this thread. Love the Indian notes! American Bank Note included many Native American vignettes among their ABN Archive Series, but there are still a number you posted that I'd never seen before. These always makes me stop and think that at the time they were engraved the Native population still stretched across most of the continent and bison still covered the plains.
I am in the market for those Western Exchange notes, I am really interested in getting an uncut sheet of them. Just have to wait for one to come into my wheelhouse...
