    This sold on Teletrade tonight. 1835 25c NGC UNC Details, Improperly Cleaned.

    I was watching it and considering bidding on it for my type set. When I saw the opening price of $700, I decided not to bid (thought it was going to start at about $500), but saw there were multiple bidders as it sold for more than the open price.

    Does anyone think a coin like this (Details) should sell for that much? Is this a variety that warrants a premium? I don't know anything about bust quarters other than this date is the highest mintage for the series by far.

    It looks nice, but NGC thinks cleaned. Should I have bid and won, it would have been cracked and put into my Dansco 7070, so no real hurt in cracking out. I might have to change the budget predictions if a UNC details coin goes for over $800. This spot has been empty for a while as I try to track down an attractive coin.

    I've got two simple comments about the coin and your post;

    1) The coin is worth what bidders will drive it up to in auction.
    2) In general, once a problem coin, always a problem coin.

    I very much disagree with the idea of chasing coins in order to fill slots or holes in sets or albums. When the right coin comes along it should be purchase. However, just as important is avoiding the wrong coin. It seems to me that you have second thoughts regarding both passing on this coin and being interested in it. In my opinion, this means that you should not bid on coins like this one (details graded at this price level). CBQs are not rare coins and one can find EF and AU examples that look wonderful with a little searching.

    From the pics it's looks great , but there must be a reason NGC detailed it as Improperly cleaned . There could be hairlines that you can't see from the pics or some other problems . That said I bought a Bust Half that said reverse improperly cleaned Unc Details . It has no hairlines and has cartwheel luster on both sides , the reverse does have a very tiny break in the luster but it is one of my favorite Bust halves . But I got it cheaper than numismedia wholesale . If you think you'd have been happy spending that much for it you probably would have since you didn't you probably made the right decision .

    I noticed a lot of coins on tonight's TT auction had high starting bids. $700 is too high, $400-$500 is plenty.

    Well if you think it's alright then that's good enough for me. Wouldn't the crack itself make it an error and make it worth even more money?

    No it's from the die cracking , at least it looks lie a die crack to me . Usually these are used on Overton #s to differentiate later die stages on bust halves , they probably do it with quarters too , but I only collect the halves .

    I agree with your statements.
    I am waiting for the right coin at the right price, and should I have been able to get this at the right price, I would have purchased. This coin just stood out to me has having excellent surfaces, and after doing some research on CBQ's, I think this is a B-3, R4 coin. If my attribution is correct, that is why the coin sold for well over what I though it would.

    I have no problem buying a coin in a details slab, if I disagree with the TPG. (Buy the coin, not the slab!) This coin, in my opinion, did not look to be heavily or harshly cleaned and would have looked great in a type set. That being said, I would have been taking a gamble with the photos provided.

    Somebody thought it was worth the $700 as it had multiple bidders. But, I agree with you...I would not have gone that high. It looks pretty nice, but it's still a problem coin.
