Could a coin with a scratch on the reverse, that is otherwise probably an MS 63/64, receive an MS grading? I know pictures would help but i have a hard time getting good pictures of silver coins. Thanks
Agreed... But to really give a good answer we would need a pic. I hope you can get a good pic to share, then we can see the coin, the scratch, the overall condition, and we could just look at a really cool silver coin! Let us know how it goes if you are submitting it and good luck!
Answer is it depends. When it comes to scratches it depends on two things : 1 what the coin is. With small coins, small scratches can keep the coin out of a regular slab. On large coins, they are more lenient. 2 - the severity of the scratch, meaning depth and length. And I suppose you say there is a 3rd thing as well, the TPGs are not consistent when it comes to scratched coins. One day they will slab it, next day they won't.
I just took these outside in natural light conditions (4:15 EST) The coin is blast white in hand, and has great luster.
oh.. I'm pretty terrible at Peace Dollars, but, and please correct me if I'm wrong, I don't see this as an MS. Maybe it's the picture or maybe I am really that bad at this series, but it looks a bit too scratched up and the high points look a bit too worn. Hopefully a Peace Dollar guru will weigh in on this.
I would have to say the coin is not MS. As for the scratch, in my opinion it is large enough and deep enough to render the coin ungradable.
i agree now that there are photos it is safe to say that if they did slab it it would be a details grade
Yes. If the technical or condition grade is MS, the scratch could conceivably take down the market or "eye appeal" grade, depending on how distracting it is. The coin is going to market grade MS, though, regardless.
Hard to say. Based on the pics the marks go clear across the eagle and are not just in the fields. But even if they would slab the coin, with those marks, unless it is a more valuable date/mint it's not going to be worth getting it slabbed.
