I have noticed in my never-ending searches for tokens and medals that many of these have a small hole drilled near the rim at the top of the obverse or most important side of them. I have been mainly looking for commemorative medals from the 1800's. A very large percentage of these seem to have the holes and I am wondering if these were made this way in some cases or if it was a "fad" at some time in history to "hole" them by persons so they could be used as a watch fob or necklace? Maybe some people collected these on a string and it was a way to keep the collection together and share with others. Here are some examples of what I am talking about. I am posting this for an educational purpose for myself and for others who may wonder about this as well.
Many of the early medals were made with holes. Finding the few that exsist without holes may be a very difficult challenge.
