hi coin experts, do any of you know what this coin is? it looks like a byzantine coin but doesn't really match up with any according to some reliable sources, it is 28-29mm and 6.8g. here are my current thoughts.. 1. its a pretty well done tourist fake/replica of some type 2. its not byzantine, but some other eastern european kingdom of the same area 3. its byzantine, but some type of token and not a coin (one idea was that it may be a seal, but seems to light)
I would go with option one because it is both fairly round and each side is well-centered as well as the fact that the images don't look "real" to me.
Sure doesn't ring a bell, but I am not sure enough to say its a tourist fake. The obverse looks like a classic A3 anonymous bronze obverse, yet the reverse looks likes a Justin II obverse. The major differences I see is in the lettering around the outside. THe Byzontines I am aware of do not have that, (on the Christ portrait it instead says IC XC) The roundness doesn't bother me, though, as many of these were quite round. Hungary made similar looking coins to the Byzantines, but that is not this coin. I guess best I can say is "unsure".
No mystery to it really. Look - http://www.google.com/search?q="ven...P_tNoXM9gSP8YBo&ved=0CD8QsAQ&biw=1280&bih=683
yeah, i would say more of the byzantine style...i did look through lots of venetian pictures (and some others, even some russian). but look at this these "byzantine christ coin" hits... http://www.google.com/search?q=%22venetian+grosso%22&hl=en&lr=&tbo=u&as_qdr=all&tbm=isch&source=univ&sa=X&ei=8CHOUP_tNoXM9gSP8YBo&ved=0CD8QsAQ&biw=1280&bih=683#hl=en&lr=&tbo=d&as_qdr=all&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=byzantine+christ+coin&oq=byzantine+christ+coin&gs_l=img.3...73998.77291.0.77830.21.15.0.6.6.0.164.1210.11j4.15.0...0.0...1c.1.QU2DuJVjl8o&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&bvm=bv.1355325884,d.aWc&fp=669a2ec4d592d1ba&bpcl=39967673&biw=1680&bih=893 lots of very similar obverses, but none with my reverse. so mystery as far as real or not, probably not real but could be.
