Japanese or Chinese (they use the same characters) equivalent of a Chuckie Cheese token.

It's Japanese - If you look at the reverse, it's Tamadayuwa or something in katakana.

Looks my my guess was fairly close, but about the wrong age group.

According to one of the sisters-in-law visiting from Japan, the Tamajiku Game Center chain has locations throughout the country with computer games, etc., for which the customer has to buy tokens to pay for the various available games. Can you say "teenagers"?

The katakana legend on the reverse reads the same as the kanji legend between the elephant's front hooves.

I'm not too sure about that. the obverse of the token is showing the value at 100 somethings. At least, that's what it looks like to me. the right most character "seems" to be official chinese for 100.
