I myself agree with at least MS-60, not bad considering I only paid Au-53 money for it, and Ms60 is $102 acording to numismedia. I'm sending it to PCGS along with other coins, I will be a happy camper if it comes back 63, that's $225
Help me out, folks -- where is the wear on this coin? Hard to tell from a photo, of course, but I thought I knew where the high points were on most Barber coinage, and I'm not seeing breaks there.
Where's log potato when you need em? I don't see any wear, so I'm going with Ms-60. I also don't see any hairlines.
The lighting and focus are a tad off, in my opinion, but if I am interpreting the images correctly there might be a bit of wear within the hair just below LIBERTY. Additionally, the fields in front of the portrait look to have some stray marks that are typically seen on lightly circulated coins instead of on mint state coins. Given this limited information, I would have to say the coin stands a very good chance of some kind of AU grade.
The wear is on the high points. But with a coin toned like this one, it is easy to think that what you are seeing is not wear but coloration. What I see, on the obv, is traces of wear in a line along the wreath from just above the ear up to and including on the forelock. A bit on the cheek bone, a bit on the nose, and here and there a bit on some of the letters of the legend. The rev shows less with just a bit on the bow and some of the leaves. I think in hand these things would be a lot easier to see when you turned the coin at just the right angles.
Au58. To me there definitely looks to be some wear on the bow, the wreath, the cheek, and the back of the neck.
Almost impossible to tell wear vs. a weak strike on these from a single photo... let the experts who see the coin in hand grade it! That said, I'll guess AU58
