Before considering this purchase, you must ask yourself: Do I have a job? Are my bills paid up to date? Do I have a financial cushion if I were to lose my job tomorrow?
Without a price, or an agreed-upon grade, our opinions would be meaningless. I see dents (?) on both the cheek and the field.
I've been studying the reverse. The rim along "United" is so much wider than along the "rica" in "America" that I begin to wonder if it's a Chinese piece. Also, the dents look more like warts now, and that's also a hallmark of a Chinese striking. Anybody agree?
OK, I defer to folks who know precisely what to look for. The guy from CW who gave a talk at our club a couple years ago was a keen observer of rim differences and slightly off-center strikes.
All this info requested is certainly none of my business, but good advice if it were given by a father to his son... I'll go ahead and assume that rickmp is not your father Detecto, so if you like it and can trade for it; and can verify it to be authentic and a good deal for you, then why not? From my recent observations (just speculation really; with all due respect) you seem to be volatile but passionate in your coin-collecting, so go ahead and do it brother. If it satisfies you, then so be it Erik
The images are showing me a blasty white reverse with a little rim toning. In general, a 120-year old silver coin that has circulated enough to be AU and has an essentially blasty white reverse has been dipped.
No, I am not his father, nor am I trying to be. I would like to remind you that Detecto likes to come here to CT to cry about not being able to get, and/or keep, a job, and asks for advice. He likes to come here to cry about not having money to pay his bills, and asks for advice. Whenever he does this, many well meaning members of CT make the time and effort to offer some very sound advice, which, for the most part, goes unheeded. When Detecto came here to ask if he "should get this?", I, as I'm sure many others did, assumed that he was contemplating a purchase. Considering his history here, I believe that my response to his question (should I get this?) was the correct one.
Hello Detecto, The photo is not good but I interpret the coin much like Tom B has: If the trade or price is good, then go ahead. If you would be happier with a problem free coin (and there are definitely some available), then don't go ahead with the deal.
Based upon the bad photo, it appears to have typical toning resulting from residue from a previous dip. A better photo would be nice.
