If you had to choose one or the other to collect, which would you choose, would you choose the Franklin half or the Barber half?
I'm going to abstain until somebody proves to me that I should vote for their side. I am at a standstill for this one for now.
Ben, cause he wasn't a pres, but he WAS awesome. Next, same point someone made re: standing lib dollars: it's cool to have a design that isn't replicated among other denominations. Next, I can afford nice looking Franklins, and last, I love that whole thing about "is it cameo?" Oh, I also love the question of "is it proof or MS?" No, one more thing: JFK's history dealt unkindly with Ben: he hadn't nearly run his course. So he gets the underdog vote, too.
Franklin. I do not care that much for the barber coinage unless in mint state or if it's a barber dime. On top of that, Franklin is da man.
Barber half. The challenge more interesting, since I prefer mid grade (f-vf) circulated coins. You can get VF Franklins everywhere.
Don't spend too much time thinking about this. Go for the Barbers. No comparison. The Ben's are just melt except in high grades.
Yeah you gotta go for Barber halves on this one, if simply due to the challenge that Mr. Flute mentioned. It is a very very difficult set to acquire in a nice, honest mid-grade. AU/BU's are thousands of dollars, and all you see at most places are polished coins or AG-G4's that are worn slick. The difficulty finding nice VF-XF examples has given me an appreciation of this series. It was definately the workhorse coin of the time period. I do like Frankies, but you can get nice graded 64-65's in practically every date for a couple of $20 bills any day of the week. I've been working on the Barber half set for years and years, and my Dansco is still mostly empty. Not because I won't shell out a good amount of money for a nice coin, but because any nice coins out there are priced at multiples of any price guide because they are so difficult to find.
Voted Franklin - everything that Petro89 said is essentially my reason too. Barbers in nice grades are outta my league. Also, Franklin is cool.
