I just got a 1944 silver nickel in change at the gas station earlier. And I was wondering what kind of finds other people have had. Not from roll searching, but in change from places like the grocery store, etc.
As far as unique finds in change I once received a 1919 cent is VG condition at my local grocery store. Also I received a 1930's $20.00 bill as change while paying for a pizza in my town's deli.
By pure coincidence, I also found a 1919 cent last year in pocket change. I'm not 100% sure of the source, but I think it came from Burger King. I didn't notice it until I got home.
I also just remembered that I found a 1999 Pennsylvania proof quarter dollar in my change one day two summers ago. I am not sure of the source but I did received it as change somewhere that day!
I can't say it was the most unique ever in change, but the most recent unusual find was a 10 cent coin in change at the company cafeteria in Connecticut. Except, it was a 10 cent coin from Bermuda! My guess is that someone came back from vacation with some change and mistook it for a US dime. Thalia appreciated adding another coin with Queen Elizabeth to her collection.
I've got a tie. 1909 Barber dime at a McDonald's drive thru and my wife got a 2000 1 oz platinum once working behind the counter at a gas station.
One ounce platinum!!!??? Wow! Perhaps it was a collector with a SERIUOUS drinking problem who needed some booze quick! Thats unbeleivable
I found a 1940 nickel in the cash register at work that I was on. Also found a 1942 wheat penny another day!
I think my best find was a wide AM 2000 cent. It was on my friends bureau in his bedroom and i looked at it and offered him a dollar. He looked at me wierd looked at it and said UHHH YEA. He didnt know that i collected coins... Peter
Few wheat cents, and canadian cents (One dated 1943) A few quarters, inc. an Iowa state quarter Canadian 5 and 10 cents also. A Barbados 1 Dollar coin and an Aussie Dollar Amazing I guess, Considering I like in the UK. My only noticable UK coin find is a 1943 Farthing.
Series 1934 $5 Federal Reserve Note, 1937D Buffalo nickel, 25 centavos from the Dominican Republic, a Canadian quarter from a vending machine, and a Canadian cent dual-dated 1867-1992. Also got these two Wheat cents, one that is heavily worn from the 1920s and the other from 1946 that really is as black as it looks in the scan.
Many have heard this story before, so if you have, just scroll on to the next thread. In June of 2000, when all the high school kids in Maryland (where I was living at the time) headed down to Ocean City for a week of fun. Kid came in to the gas station where my wife worked for gas, soda, and cigarettes. He tried to pay with his grandmother's graduation gift. A 2000 1 oz platinum. My wife tried to explain to him what he had, but his response was "If I don't spend it here, I'll spend it someplace else." So she took it. And bought it out of the register for face value. Held on to it for a few days in case it had been "liberated" from somebody's collection. Nobody showed, so it now sits in my collection.
Wow. I feel sorry for the kid. Not because he lost his coin, but because he was ignorant enough to give something like that away. And a graduation gift from his grandmother at that. Its just insane. But, if he was going to give it away anyway, I'm glad a fellow collector got it.
Cool find Adam, I have not found anything out of the ordinary lately. I am on the other side now since hearing about that story about that guy releasing a 1909S VDB coin into circulation. I thought that was so cool that I would do the same on a much smaller scale. You see I collect wheats and lets just say I have a few. So I will put out a early teen, favorite is 1919, into one of the cups on the counter of a store. I could just imagine the converstion piece it brings to that person.
An 1865 three cent nickel in the cash register at work- along with 36 silver dimes (Barbers, Mercs, and Roosies). This was in 1994.
