Im not a huge collector I just buy coins sometimes. I want some silver so im planning to buy a american eagle coin. Is there any certain one that is better or something? Lower mintages? Which one should I purchase? http://www.apmex.com/Category/278/Proof_Silver_Eagles_Box__Coa_2012__Prior.aspx
If you're not concerned about collecting, just getting some silver, just buy whatever. Can't remember...it's 93 or 94 that's the lowest year. If you want a fancy one, consider proofs and the reverse proof. I REALLY like the reverse proof.
I started with American Silver Eagle coins too. I don't bother with proofs as I just collect for the metal value. I eventually switched to where I buy "junk silver" or basically old silver coins from circulation (1964 and older). At first I didn't want this because the coins were always ugly and dirty looking. But then I learned how to clean them up and make them look just as shiny and nice as an ASE. So now that is what I concentrate on mostly.
Given what you state, I would suggest buying the cheapest proof ASE you can find. If you are just looking for silver, consider the bullion ASE (as you can get them much closer to spot silver). Now, if you are looking for relatively low mintage ASEs, go with the W burnished issues...the 2011 and 2012 are still available from the US Mint. TC
Don't forget to check your local coin shops. They can have really good deals. As an example - I was buying my junk silver from eBay before checking my LCS. When I did check, they beat every eBay purchase I had made (I keep records). And you know, once you establish a good rapport they may even cut you deals.
