What a beautiful set! The outside sliding box is Gold and the top portion of the inner box is Gold and the bottom section is Silver. The case itself is some sort of hard plastic with a soft "leather" top. Both coins are really nice and if wasn't for the set I would have them graded, they are that nice. The only thing that was bad was that they were loose in the case and I had to put them back in their respective holes. Those of you who bought this set should be pleased. The Mint really outdid themselves on this one.

i can't wait for the silver 3 coin set (I am purchasing a Spanish trail instead of the gold set)
you can always have them graded and keep the packaging...

My 3 coin set was that way too. All the capsules were just rattling around loose in the box.

    Packaging

Internal packaging is a problem for a few mints. Small bubble wrap will put some prseeure on the coins with the lids closed. Coin sets with plaques or heavy coins become shard and will break an encapsulated coin. I have spoke with a couple of foreign mints and they are going to make some changes to keep returns down and keep the bottom line up. Also this might help keep their customer base intact. If you receive coins that are not encapsulated and have become free in the box you should notify the mint they came from. Some of the boxes from overseas look pretty rough so internal packaging to secure coins is a must. Most credit card companies will not let you dispute a sale from overseas. Only if merchandise was never received will they listen. The R.A.M. has redoubled their effort to stop returns, and if your a fan of Isralie coins they also are aware of internal packaging security.

Yes, it does stink that the same coins will be available individually, but I think it's cool to have the set in the Mint packaging too. Now, worth $100 more...that's your call. And yes, I totally disagree with the way that the Mint is choosing to release selective information when they want in order to boost sales. It's very poor taste.

If the W UNC sells for $720 from the Mint and I see where I can buy a 2006 proof from California Numismatics for $780, then that leaves a price of $1100 for the reverse proof. Is this coin worth $1100? It appears to be the only unique coin in the set now. I wonder if it is better to spend the $2610 on an Indian Head or St. Gaudens? Any comments?

The reverse proof will be the chase coin for sure.
I'll buy all the reverse proofs anyone wants to sell for $1,100.00 all day long!...ok well not all but I'll buy 5.

The Reverse Proof gold coin doesn't come in the two piece set that Exiled is talking about. It only comes in the three piece gold coin set.

Do you think the fancy packaging will make the set more desirable?

Some people like to collect the Mint Sets as they come from the Mint. For those people, they will want the coins in the 2 coin packaging from the Mint. However, I think for a lot of people, they don't care as much about the packaging and just want the coins, so for those people, they could care less about the packaging, especially if they're paying a $100 premium or so just to get the coins in the 2-coin package.
