I had the BEST Half Dollar roll search today....I searched a mere $200 worth of halves and found: 21 40% halves including: 3-1965 2-1966 7-1967 7-1968-D 2-1969-D 7 90% halves including: 6-1964 Kennedy's 1-1958-D Franklin I'll have to send my Dad back tommorow to get the remaining 300 dollars in halves they have=) :hail:
Wow! Lucky guy! I can't even get a roll of halves in my whole town and we've got like 11 banks here. Darn, nice finds!!
This might be a stupid questions but..... How do you "cash" them out for silver value?? Do you just take them to a coin dealer??
Yup, dealers will usually pay somewhere around 80% of melt. You could also check with your friendly neighborhood jeweler, who will certainly do the same for gold, and possibly for silver as well.
Oh, by the way, I also found: 1971-D in AU 1976-D in AU 2001-D in AU and a 2003-D in AU (these weren't minted for circulation, were they?) I also found what I'm sure is a magician's coin....a two tailed half (far left in the picture)
Ok, I got the remaining 300 dollars in halves and found 24 more 40% and 7 more 90% including another Franklin (1963) for a total of: 45 40% halves 14 90% halves Great find if I do say so myself=p I'll definently be ordering another 500 bucks worth!!
Dang! When I go to the bank seeking halves, I'm lucky to get a few, not even a whole roll. So far I've only gone to my own banks (2), but I'm thinking of canvasing the rest of the banks in the town, and telling them that if they are a good coin provider I'll open an account with them. I never knew it was so difficult to get rolls of coins nowadays. Even the stores, like Target, won't give me a roll of new cents! Strategies? Call the bank manager? Have them order them?
um...well, I'm just really friendly with the people at my bank, and asked them if they could order a box of halves, and they did=)
Dot- In my experience there are two kinds of sources of halves: (1) banks where they collect over time, and (2) banks that will order boxes for you from the Fed or whoever. Whenever I go to a bank I've never been to before and ask for halves, it's case number (1), and they are almost always very happy to give you as many as they have. This is typically anywhere between $10 and $900 worth (since at $1000 they can ship it off). In case (2), where boxes are ordered, that is not free for the bank and most banks will not do this for non-customers. Even if you're a customer, they might charge you a small fee. I always prefer case number (1) because I have found *many* more silver halves that way (average is around 5-8%), but the disadvantage is that once you've bought them all, that's it, there are no more. In case (2) the supply is in principle limitless, but the "keeper" yield is much, much lower (0.3% for me). So, if you have the time I would recommend going to all the banks you can drive to and asking them for halves first. When you've exhausted that, think about ordering them.
Roll searching is some of the best, and cheapest fun a collector can have. You are only out the amount you keep and the gas to get to the bank. My only silver Kennedy's came from roll searches. Also found an UNC 1944-D cent too. Never know what you'll find. I have $200 in half dollars and about $120 in cents to return to the bank. Boy will they be glad to see me!
Got my box of $500 today and I found the following keepers: 1- Franklin 15-40% 1984-s Proof 1987-s proof 2001-s Silver Proof 3-2001P 1-1987-d 1-Golden dollar Not a bad box.
I was in OK last week and went the bank and asked for halves (cause my bank doesn't or won't get them, here in Fla.) and wound up buying $400.00 and found 21 40% and one that that was bubbled out on both sides, also found a 1974d DD obv
