Whats your thoughts on SEGS as a TPG service. I know for sales value use PCGS but is SEGS grading fairly reliable?

I think they are considered "second tier" along with PCI. I have only owned one coin in a segs holder, it looked liek it was accuratly graded to me.

If you have an hour or so to kill, click on the Search button at the top of the page, type "SEGS" in the box, and try to find a single comment praising those self agrandizing coin sellers. SEGS is an FPG, not a [BTS[/b]PG. When seller and grader are the same entity, where's the third party?

I was under the impression that SEGS was borderline respectable, and perhaps the #6 best TPG after PCI.

SEGS is pretty good for varieties---but on grading and such I wouldn't go for them...IIRC they also slab fake coins.

I am giving ANACS a try, i know they are well respected but i have never sent anything off to them before...
I was also thinking of sending some stuff off to SEGS just to give them a shot.
I will say one thing for sure about SEGS though:
They have the best slabs IMHO. they put the coin type and grade on a label on top of the slab, so you can see what a coin is without having to dig them out of a box. I like that, I wish NGC or PCGS could do something similar (SEGS has a patent on it)

ANACS has changed alot in the last few months....they now have a slab just liek SEGS---it shows at the top also....their grading on some coins seem to be looser---and some tigher.
You might want to search the forum for New ANACS.

I sent some coins i know have problems, but are still worth $$$, like a pan-pacific that has been lightly cleaned, but still has AU+ detail. I also have an Alabama 2X2 that has a very small rim nick (it may actually be a contact mark) but is still a high grade coin. who knows, it may come back in a non-problem coin holder. If it does i will send it to NGC for crossover...

I also sent some other coins in... its mostly to test them out. I plan on having every coin that is not common/non-valuable slabbed so that in the event of my death (knock on wood) my family has an easier time liquidating them.

as you can probably tell i am not slab-phobic ;) I am also not scared of purchasing raw coins.

I went with ANACS because they seem to have a better rep then PCI...

I completely agree with this approach. It isn't a foolproof solution, but it's a big help to a non-collector trying to figure out what they have, and not get ripped off.

not that long ago i helped a family liquidate a coin collection, they where completly overwhelmed by it and where about to sell it all in a lump to a dealer. luckily i stepped in before that, and was able to get them over 2x what they thought it was worth. not a single coin in a slab...

after thinking about that incident i decided to make sure that when i died my survivors would know what i have and what it is worth. its the least i can do :)

This is something I should really do as well. I have a Dansco album full of high grade Jeff's with RPM's and Dbld dies (some I believe to be discovery pieces that I been meaning to get attributed for years as well) that I've cherry picked over the years and I should have slabbed for those I leave behind.
But, my real question is can I trust the grading of SEGS when purchasing?

I am doing that slowly also----I'm doing it for more the reason that it will be easier for me to sell them when the time comes---I have 2 more that I need to send in soon.....a Boone Comm and a 1926-S Buff Nickel that will grade VF.

No, they routinely misgrade coins. You must be able to grade for yourself if you want to purchase SEGS coins, and then after you have graded them, then only pay the proper amount, and not the amount commensurate with the listed grade.
