View attachment 221461 Hey all. I am meeting someone today to purchase this Carson city Morgan dollar for 200 bucks. I need to know quickly if this is a mistake and if I am overpaying. There is a pic attached below and hopefully you could help me make a decision and find out if I am being scammed. The dollar doesn't seem to be in fine condition but I can't tell if it is in good condition from the photo. Thanks for your time Larry
Can't see the picture. just a bit of info for you.. an 1885CC Morgan in VG is worth about $450.00. Does it sound to good to be true to you yet?
Yes but the condition is a bit worn. Should I be concerned over its authenticity? He originally listed it for 1000 bucks but I told him in that condition it's worth no more than 250 and that I would only pay 200 for it. Pic should be visible now.
May not be genuine. Check carefully, as the Morgan is the most counterfeited coin out there--lots of cheap Chinese copies.
I still can't see the pics. I'd be pretty cautious about some who lists a coin for $1000 and then fairly quickly gets worked down to only $200. Along with all the other tests mentioned you can also familiarize yourself with the know die pairs (VAMS) for the '85-CC. It's pretty easy to remember them considering there are only 4 (and only 2 reverses). http://www.vamworld.com/1885-CC+VAMs
No. Before you start buying coins from unknown individuals, it would be wise to both familiarize yourself and learn as much as possible about whatever it is you wish to seek out. There are lots of newbies today who think coins a quick cash generator, and there are plenty willing to prey off of their inexperience. Don't let the draw of a quick buck blind you.
Say goodbye to your money. If you can't tell a fake then you shouldn't be contemplating this counterfeit.
I look at the rim first for casting, (bad denticles, etc). Second tell is the stars. By 1885, they knew how to make a sharp star. Look at those stars on that coin in the instagram pic. I would walk away, save $200 and maybe buy a genuine 82,83 or 84 CC.
Well I am glad I posted here. Something about this deal told me it was too good to be true. And I've heard that sometimes the magnet test does not work. Thanks for the advice guys. Just one thing off topic. I've noticed people on this forum are quick to post a nasty remark. I just want to say that the reason people come here is to get educated. There is no reason to get nasty if someone posts a stupid question. If you can't help the person or refuse to because of their stupidity keep it to yourself and let the moderators handle the rest. It seems like people troll forums to give their cynical opinion. I know this doesn't go for all of you I just ask that you keep it in the back of your mind and be respectful to others.
It is definitely a fake. The lettering E Pluribus Unum is very crude, as is the date. DO NOT buy it. That is a coin that only an experienced collector should buy outside of a slab, as it is one of the really good Morgan dates.
