I have not checked here as oftena as I should but has anyone seen what the new presidential dollar coins are supposed to look like I saw artist renderings in CoinWorld a while back but I thought they were speculative I am just curious if anyone knows?????????
Hello. The designs, for those US Mint products, have not been created yet. You can be sure that when they are, there will be a very active advertising campaign put into effect, and you will have no problem finding out what they are going to look like.
There are already folders for sale for presidential coin collections similar to the state quarter folders. It's difficult to believe that this will be something worth collecting. It isn't money, it's marketing.
What a lot of it is is probably a marketing attempt by the government to make the $1 coin acceptable. With the success of the state quarters turning so many people into "collectors" and generating some small interest in coins among a lot of people-maybe the government expects the same response to a dollar coin series. If that is the case, it will generate more interest in a dollar coin and perhaps make it an acceptable form of currency to the general public. At least, I think its possible (if that makes sense). As far as "worth collecting," I doubt they will ever have any value much over face but it might be fun to assemble a set...and to me, thats what makes anything worth collecting. :kewl:
I agree with you completely, and I think it's a good idea. However, the problem I see is that I believe they're using the same planchets as the Sacagewea $1 coins, and they seem to look pretty bad (tarnished, dirty, etc) after being circulated for a while, so that might lessen the appeal.
Richie, You're probably right. But a big part of collecting for me is the historical aspect and returning to the days when coin money actually had intrinsic value because of the gold or silver content. So in my mind, a new "slug" will never have the appeal of an old silver dollar from the West. Maybe that just proves that there is something for every taste in the hobby.
Yes is it isant alot of money and i have the budget i might assemble a set as some of you have said Peter
Our dollar coins are circulating, not here in the USA but in Boliva. The surplus Sacagewae coins have been sent there since the Bolivian monetary system is pegged to the dollar. In order for the presidential dollars to circulate here in the US we would have to eliminate the dollar bill, in my opinion. And if you eliminate the dollar bill you're opening a can of worms. Think of all the jobs that would be lost by eliminating the dollar bill. From printing, technicians, managerial, distribution and the paper makers to others. What politician would want to tackle that mess.
According to Coin World, they are doing something about the tarnishing problem with the presidential dollars. I believe they wil; treat the planchets or do something just short of changing the composition of the metal in the blanks.
You guys are probably right that a dollar coin won't be completely accepted without the $1 bill being abolished...but perhaps this is the "baby step" idea. First, introduce a "collectible" dollar coin series that will see circulation as "lay people" and collectors alike try and assemble sets thereby generating interest in the $1 coin. Perhaps then, a few years into the Presidental Dollar, start to phase out the $1 bill. By the end of the Presidental series, the dollar bill is gone and the coin is circulating. I don't think we can just introduce a dollar coin and expected everyone to love it. But, by making it "interesting" such as a series like this, maybe phasing out the bill is next. I completely agree, there is nothing like collecting the older coins-to me, moderns can't even compare. But, there are many collectors out there (myself included) who like to collect a little of this and a little of that. I wish for example, I could dedicate myself to a Morgan Dollar collection but being a college student (and soon to be a graduate student) and simply can't come up with the funds. For me, the joy of collecting at the moment comes simply from the hunt. I will deffinately assemble a Presidental Dollar collection as they come out, hopefully at face price right out of circulation. It will never be worth anything, but it will be fun. To me, thats whats important.
The Presidential Dollar won't circulate unless the $1 bill is eliminated. Why, by the way, isn't it eliminated? Political reasons I'm sure. The new Pesidential Dollars will be a cash cow for the mint, no doubt. As a former history teacher, I have long been excited about the new coin. I would like to see different reverses for the coins however, rather than the same design on all of them.
I would like to see the mint change the dollar size back to the original full size of pre 1978. IMO that would make it more collectable. As a kid I really liked spending the IKES. I really dislike the current size. However, it’s probably not practical because of the bulk, production costs, and paper dollars are very convenient.
I think the bigger coins are "cooler" but I think increasing their size back to the Ikes would be a disastrous move. If you want to see what I'm talking about, go to the bank and get a roll of half dollars. These are exactly proportional to the Ikes so the analogy will hold. Now grab $4 in half dollars and toss them in your pocket. Now go walk around a while with that change in your pocket. Now do the same with $4 in Sacs. Which is better? IMO, the Ike coolness wears off pretty quick when you have those bulky guys clinking around in your pocket. I'm also assuming that about the time they kill the penny, they will eliminate the dollar bill. I figure that's gonna happen in 09.
You'll know for sure soon enough - tentative release dates : Feb. 16 for the George Washington dollar May 18 for John Adams Aug. 17 for Thomas Jefferson Nov. 16 for James Madison The Mint announced these dates a couple of weeks ago at Denver forum. I suspect finalized designs will be published quite soon.
does any one know or would like to guess how will these coins be sold by the mint? will they all be included in the mint & proof sets? will they be sold in special 4 coin sets? offered individually?, in rolls? do you think they will mint so many, in every possible way so that they'll make a ton of bucks, and the coins will never be worth anything other than a buck? I really would like to see them being used by the public in circulation.
That's your only question that I can respond to without getting my crystal ball repaired: Won't happen No way Unh-unh I could go on, but you get the idea. If history has taught us anything, it is that so long as there is a light, minimal bulk $1 bill, the public won't start carrying around heavy, bulky dollar coins.
Next year's mint sets are going to be huge. Ten dollar coins (they're not ending the sac series), ten quarters and two halves, dimes, nickels and pennies. Then in '09 we're going to have six pennies and the new quarter. I want to have the proofs from 2009 on to have only one of each denomination.
H.R. 5818, Currency Overhaul for an Industrious Nation (COIN) Act, in congress now calls for the elimination of the cent and a phaze-out of the $1 bill. It has little chance of passage this time around but is gaining some support. The bill includes commemerative $2 bills and Fed. Reserve control of the mint and BEP among other things. http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h109-5818
