I caught myself looking at foreign coins today at the coin show. I never ever buy foreign coins just U.S. I ended up leaving with a bunch of Canadian cents, a gold plated 1938 Nazi coin, 2 coins from North Korea (I'm very interested in what happens there and what they ware up to so I just had to buy them.), and A Israeli coin! Next month i'm going back and getting more foreign coins.
Actually...that is really interesting and I should educate myself on these ancients too. (I am an early European History major)
I was a history major too and that's the major reason why I am interested in world coins. It's a physical tie to all these historical events and periods that I've read about.
You should try a trip to the UK! I was at an Antiques and collectors fair yesterday - three coin dealers (one of which was me) with bucket loads of good value foreign coins from all over the world. I sold a few, but most UK buyers were after either old British coins, or proof sets - so we could do with some of collectors over here. Paddy
I can only imagine what the selection might be like in Europe. I don't think I'd be able to get them home on the plane though. I wouldn't be able to lift my baggage because I'd have so many.
I love the UK except for one thing. Lack of space. I guess I am too American and too used to having lots of free space everywhere. I think it would be more bearable if I was a New Yorker or Chicagoite. Btw, two initials, BM. I could spend a month in that place and still argue I need more time in there. I would say probably the world's greatest museum. If you will be living in the UK please avail yourself to this wonderful institution.
History major gone aircraft mechanic, very interesting. Regarding foreign coins, I am interested in them for only one reason - beautiful and interesting designs (mostly the beautiful women part of that).
Same logic applies with foreign notes as well, maybe even more so. US currency has gotten so bloody expensive, I think note collectors should also be looking strongly at international opportunities. There is some outstanding artwork printed on international notes.
And It Has Happened Again... Once more... So I was browsing the 1901-2000 Krause World Coin catalogue and came across the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. Then I thought to meself, "wow, wouldn't that be great to have one of these coins in my collection." So I checked on eBay and found some listed, but as usual they were a bit over priced and I of course was out bid. So then I says to meself I says, "nah...nowts this tyme." Two days later while at the shoppes, I found this little gem amongst the five and twenty coins in a small sack that I purchased from the shoppe-keep.
Fun,isnt it! Plus, think of all of the great history and geography you are picking up "accidentally". I so much hope my son takes this hobby up. If i were a kid i would have loved to have access to all the books and coins i want to give him.
What happened to that one shoppe you went to that had all those great African coins in the foreign bin? You 'member? http://www.cointalk.com/t209351/
I still find some good coins there sometimes, but at the end of the year in 2011 they cleared out all their world coins so they wouldn't have to do inventory, and it's never been the same since.
I'm always looking at foreign coins at my lcs. I find the US coins to be expensive at times. And plus the store I go to treats me right. Sometimes they even sell me silver foreign coins for less then bullion price.
