That's a great story, but unfortunately the coin is holed, so that brings down the value significantly from others of similar details and no damage.

Sorry, I don't know the value.

Yeah, with that hole, I'm at a loss of how to value it. Without the hole, I would say $125-$250. I would think the hole would take it down to about $50-$75.

Without a hole ? $125-$250 thats imposible, in the chart doesnt figure that amounts even in 12Grade.

Charts and price guides are places to start. The coin might be a rare die combination.

I'm going off what I paid for a 1798 cent about three months ago. I paid $175 for on in F12 condition.

Just a couple of things about the pricing. First, the PCGS pricing guide is considered by many to be overvaluing coins that are PCGS slabbed. and the second thing is that to even consider that price guide, it would have to be in a PCGS "grade" holder rather than a "details" or returned with no indication of possible grade. With the hole it is considered damaged. A pricing would be what someone would pay for it, and no chart or generality could set one, as size of hole. location, etc. could vary as well as a value.

members are giving their best shot at this, but it not possible to locate a value range just from wear and dies.

Yeah, desertgem and lonegun said, variety could have quite an influence on the value. I really have no idea on variety.

I'm sure there are members here that know more than I do and may be able to tell you the variety and give you a rough estimate of value. As desertgem said, pretty much any value estimate would be rough.

Welcome to the forums, by the way.

The rule of thumb with valuing a coin with a hole is to deduct 75% of what a coin would be worth if it didn't have a hole. So to say the coin is worth $50-$75 down from $125-$250 without the hole is fairly accurate.

Looks like S-187, R-1. But I am giving no guarantees.
Details of VF20, downgraded to VG7 for damage, you are looking at about $100-170 (assuming you find somebody who is not bothered by the hole).

If its a R-4 variety, then it may be worth a little more, (but not much).

As a collector, holes bother me. I wouldn't pay that price, I likely wouldn't pay more than $30 if I had to buy it. Most coins with holes unless extremely rare I walk away and will seek out a problem free one.

Good point about the location of the hole influenencing the price because the first thing I thought when I saw the coin was that "it's a shame that the hole is over the 1/100." That is one of my favorite features of these coins because it's a feature that stands out and you don't see on moderns.

You are right, I was trying to be gentle. That is why I said 'assuming you find someone who is not bothered by the hole'

I have bought coins with holes before, but they happen to be extremely rare issues.

I think it could still go for closer to Eduard's price range, or maybe a bit higher. It seems, for some coins on Ebay, that some buyers do not factor in the hole into the value as much.
