Hey everyone, this is my first post here so sorry if its not in the right section. Anyway I've been collection coins since I was 7, however I have never had a coin like this. I'm fairly sure it's a proof coin, I would just like some feedback to confirm this. I work at sonic and someone gave it to me as a regular quarter for change. The coin in question is the one on the right, I found a quarter of the same year for comparison. On the front and back the coin has a mirror like background. It's a 1981s quarter. From what I've researched it's worth about$2-3. Can anyone confirm this for me? Thanks! -Casey image.jpg

It's a proof from the look o' things. Pics are blurry but confirm for me one thing......That an 'S' on the obverse (right side of bust)?

Yepp that is indeed a "s" mint mark. Any idea of the value?? I was thinking between $2-3?

Well Redbook has it in PF 65 at around $4.

Cool, thanks! sounds a lot better than face value! You wouldn't believe the amount of people who don't look at the change they give me. I've found a number of buffalo nickels, silver dimes and quarters, a 1936 mercury dime and a 1926 liberty quarter just for starters! Thanks again, happy hunting! :)

Doesn't the Redbook only count for coins that are truly PF65? I mean, this coin was obviously in someones pocket and will show signs of circulation. When this happens, PF58 is required along with a much lessor "value".

If anything at all, its value is as a memorable coin but certainly nothing that would fetch any type of premium over 25 cents.

Congrats to the OP though as its very exciting to find or at least notice something very different in the change you receive! However, I'd be remiss if I actually supported a $3-$4 true value for the coin. None the less, it's cool to find these "in the wild"!

BTW, when I crack variety coins out of proof sets from 1968 through 2012, I typically spend the other proofs in the sets since it costs more to sell them than it's worth it to me given listing costs, final values fee's, shipping supplies, not to mention keeping track of everything!

BTW, if anybody is interested, the next time I crack open proof sets, I'd be happy to send my cast offs to you if you pickup the associated costs which would come to about $3.00. Just shoot me a PM and I'll compile a list.

Yeah, but that coins seen some action and is now what they call an impaired proof.......I don't think it would make '65.

Thanks everyone. It was easly picked out from the handful of quarters the guy gave me. Still waiting for my 1943 copper wheat :) maybe then I can afford some higher grade coins haha

Is it really that rare to find them floating around? I guess I have the ideal job for coin collecting!

Quick question, been doing a little more research into error coins and if this coin has a "clear" s mint mark, would that increase the value? I'm kind of confused on the meaning behind this and how can I tell if I have one??

Proof coins get into circulation when somebody steals somebody's proof sets & cracks them open & spends them.

Check out this link as, it applies to Suzy B's, but I think it might explain the differences in the mint marks. Just scroll down a bit.....

It is a nice to find a proof coin in circulation. I would vote for a value of $1.50 since you can get a 1981 proof set for about $7 including the SAC, half, quarter, dime, nickel, and penny. I'll value roughly as follows:

    SAC $2.00
    Half $2.00
    Quarter $1.50
    Dime $0.50
    Nickel $0.50
    Cent $0.50
