    Hi again folks,
I found this 20 year commemorative Kennedy while roll searching, The pics do not do it justice it a beauty.
2 Questions #1 why did this coin not get gold plated like all the rest?
#2 does anyone have the news paper insert that I can copy off to put with this coin? I know its nothing special but is it Chrome plated? Silver Plated? Did it get the Nickle and not the gold What gives?
THANKS NEWBIE 010.jpg 009.jpg HERE JON

I don't know what plating was used, but if you paid any more than 50c for it, you got the shaft. This is not a Mint-issued coin, and as such, is damaged.

.50 cents is it. It is a 20 year commemorative done in 84 to celebrate 20 years of something with Kennedy they sold for I think $5.50 a piece but were gold plated.

You know what PT Barnum said........."There's a sucker born every minute."

    It is still Post-Mint Damage!

Thousands of coins are plated and sold to the public for whatever reasons and some may or may not actually commemorate some event.

As for your particular coin, I've seen these before but never with gold plating.

From a numismatic standpoint, they are collectible but only from an exonumia standpoint as Chris pointed out, it's considered damaged from a "coin collecting" standpoint.

Now, if you remember for sure that you've seen a newspaper add for these, perhaps your best bet in locating that add might be to start looking for newspapers from 1980? Maybe research your local paper's archives with a visit to their headquarters? Other than that, I can't think of any other method of locating such an ad.

I've seen a bunch of these counter stamped halves while roll searching. There are varieties out there other than 1960-1980 and I've seen gold and silver (maybe chrome?) plated ones. I throw 'em back for someone else to find.

1960 - 1980 would likely mean they are commemorating 20 years since he was elected into office and the 1984 coin is commemorating 20 years of the coin (still odd to mark it with 1960 and 1980 on it as the marketing of the coin just really doesn't make sense). Why damage the coin though? Put it in a fancy box commemorating 20 years of the coin and the suckers would have bought it without the damage done to it.

Regardless of all that, it's not even worth 50 cents to me. If I got one in change, I'd just turn around and spend it again.

Why find them not gold plated? The company stamped up a bunch of them and plated them in batches. They couldn't sell all of them so they just dumped the rest of the stamped unplated coins back into circulation.

These come with all different dates. the fact that this one happens to be 1984 is just a coincidence. It does show one thing though, this twenty year "commemorative" was stamped at least four years AFTER the date being commemorated. These also exist with the dual date 1960 1985 for the 25th anniversary.

So what you are saying is that it is still worth 50 cents then if you spend it ;).
