    What makes you think it's a proof[IMG]

Those pictures don't demonstrate either a proof quality strike, or proof qality surfaces, to me. There were almost 12 times as many circulation coins as proofs struck at San Fran that year..

The San Francisco mint struck cents for circulation back in 1972. It looks like that is what you have got.

Are S mint marks worth saving on to if I come across them in circulation?

    • 1909VDB cent - Absolutely, positively, without a doubt, in any recognizable condition :thumb:
    • Errorless 2006 cent - No way, no how, unh-unh [IMG]
    • Anything else - Maybe, perhaps, could be, (all depending upon rarity and condition)[IMG]

I would save them myself simply because I've been putting all pre-1982 cents into a jar being that they are worth more than twice face value in copper metal. But that's just me.

But anyhow, the S mint cents from 1968-1974 have a low mintage compared to Denver and Philly. Both P & D mints from 1972 minted about 3 billion cents each, while the S mint only minted about 360 million. Thus, you don't see them in circulation as much (the 1974S hole in my from circulation set took a long time to fill!). However, with 360 million of them around, unless the example is really nice, it'll probably only be worth what a common circulated wheat cent is worth - not much over face. Whether you feel like it's worth setting them aside is up to you.
