Anyone have any idea that if you purchase multiple proof sets from the mint at the same time, that you will end up with a run of coins that were minted at the same time using the same dies? It would seem to make sense. I'm starting to go though my Grandfather's proof set collection, and his thing was to buy 5 proof sets every year from the mint. I'm seeing things like for the 1971 sets, that the nickel in all five is a nice cameo - stuff like that.
Yes. It still happens. I got three proof sets this year and on all of them the Colorado quater was a very weak strike.
One of the things my Grandfather did is he would usually only open up one of the items he bought, and look at that. I have 5 each of 1961, 1962, 1963, and 1964 proof sets in envelopes, of which 4 of each year are sealed in their envelopes and I know they have never been picked over by anyone. But after looking at the unsealed ones from each year, it doesn't look like there is going to be anything really exciting in the sealed ones. The 1964 dime is a weak cameo, but the rest of the coins look pretty average as early 60's proof sets go. I'll probably end up opening them up anyway.
