I see a lot of bank rolled pennies with Mercury Dimes on the end. People pay a good amount for these. Is this just a scam or were there really a lot of dimes put in penny rolls a while back?
It's a marketing scheme trumped up by upstart entrepreneurs of lower class America. Yes, they are made up rolls.
Absolutely Rocky, folks who don't know any better are intrigued by these "lottery" rolls. As long as they're not spending thousands of dollars of their 401k, then in their world it's acceptable.
I wouldn't ever guy one of these, I just see so many people already purchasing them. I much rather heckle people at flea markets for silver is I am looking for a deal rather than taking a chance like this.
Let's rephrase this......... It's a marketing scheme trumped up by low-class Americans. Maybe we should "coin" a new acronym for these rolls rather than refer to them as OBW rolls. How about "SSA" rolls? Scum Sucking Americans Chris
+1 and then some. Talk about going to the well once too often, on any given day, there are thousands of "unsearched" roll auctions on the bay. I'd say the market is a little flooded.
Meh - I see these auctions on FeeBay and don't really have a problem with them. They are usually clearly described as being a roll of whatever sort of pennies with some sort of silver dimes on the ends. As long as the buyer knows what they're buying, what's the problem? I don't think anyone buys these thinking they're getting a whole roll of mercury dimes that were mistakenly rolled into a penny roll.
Maybe not, but there is a good chance that they believe the rolls are unsearched (usually false), because that is what the seller says.
Agreed, most if not all of these listings state pretty much exactly what to expect. I guess if people are going to fall for it and think they are going to get a $100+ roll for $20 -$30, more power to the sellers.
I go to my local Fed. Credit Union and buy pennie rolls come home and check out if they are copper or not. Usually 1 roll out of 12 have a regular dime in the roll. So I'm ahead 9 cents.
