Alright, so I went to the coin shop trying to see if he had a 1914-D Lincoln Cent, he said he just sold one but had some new Lincolns that he would check. He pulled a bag from the back that he must have just got, and pulled out a bunch of different coins. I asked if I could look through it and he said sure, long story short here, ended up buying an 1883 Liberty V Nickel, 1857-O Dime, VG, 1883 Dime, VF, 1914 Dime, UNC Details, 1894 Barber, UNC, 1920 Standing Liberty, UNC, 1870 Belgium 5 Francs, VF+, and an ancient coin that I just posted in another section to find out information about it. Was hoping you could give me your opinion on the coins. The 1883 V Nickel has slight wear on the star points, but looks very nice. the 1914 Dime looks to be cleaned, but paid $5, so I figured why not. I'm not going to post pictures of the seated dimes, paid $15, $20, for those. The two coins I'm most interested in are the quarters. Grades and Prices would be greatly appreciated. I'll let you know later on what I paid for the Quarters and the V Nickel.
The SLQ and 1883 w/cents are real nice acquisitions regardless. The 1883 I would peg around an AU55 and the SLQ around the same as well, the front leg has a little flatness to it that would indicate some wear. I'll let the Barber experts chime in on the others, they appear XF's, maybe 45's. The hairlines on the dime would indicate some sort of improper cleaning.
Thanks. I was thinking the same thing as far as AU on the V Nickel and the SLQ. The SLQ is the one that made me buy the group. I picked out the ones I wanted and set them aside and asked him how much each of the coins were. Then, taking notes from Frank on American Pickers, I pulled a bundle :hail: I'm starting to think bundles are the way to go LOL I don't plan on keeping them all, hoping to sell a few of them to bring my costs down on the ones I do keep. The SLQ isn't going anywhere :smile
The SLQ is a dipped out, mid-range AU that would likely grade AU55. There is absolutely no way, no how that the SLQ is MS (uncirculated). The Liberty nickel bothers me because the 1883 with Cents issue is very common and can be found with a much nicer strike than this coin. I'm not a fan of either piece. The 1894 Barber quarter and 1914 Barber dime are both harshly cleaned. This is the type of look you should avoid. Overall, I think all have issues.
True, but a little harsh (no pun intended) - still very collectable. I haven’t compare the prices you paid with the going price, so depends on what kind of deal you got, as to whether or not I’d be happy with the purchase.
I understand how it might be read, but the OP wanted opinions based upon the images and that was provided. All of these coins are very common and similar pieces can be found without issues, which therefore negatively affects the liquidity of the purchase. I didn't address the prices at least in part because there are no images of the other coins.
On the contrary, the 1883 W/Cents was a great buy. It is not as common as the w/o cents and is in great condition. $15 was a great buy for it.
I don't mind the "harshness" of the comments. I thought they were cleaned but figured I could still make a profit and maybe get a free coin. Never hurts to try
