Hey John- The coin you describe is a well-known piece among roll searchers, I have several myself. This coin is not an error or an official issue, but was made by someone who manipulated a regular U.S. one-cent coin by simply stamping an image of John F. Kennedy next to Lincoln. Several variations on this theme circulate. They usually come on a card with an explanation of strange similarities between Lincoln And Kennedy. -Both Were Shot -Lincoln shot in a theater and Kennedy's assassin was caught in a theater. -Lincoln had a secretary named Kennedy and J.F.Kennedy had a secretary named -Lincoln. None of these stamped examples hold any numismatic value. They are worth only a cent, maybe more as a conversation piece. They have been made since the late sixties.
That's one of the things I like about coins. You might say it's only worth one cent, but I'd probably be willing to go as high as $0.05. Maybe I'm overpaying at that price, but $0.05 is $0.05 to the seller.
Well, interestingly enough, there are buyers for the pieces that still have the original facts card attached. Here's one auction that just recently ended. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Uncirculate...83?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item2ec328f5bb Crazy huh?
Just for more info on the subject, some of the similarities between the two are false, and some are not as remarkable as they seem. Good write-up at Snopes: http://www.snopes.com/history/american/lincoln-kennedy.asp
Er......ah.......um.........never mind. The Brits have enough problems with the flooding right now. I don't want to get them started on something else. Chris
One of these were given to me as a kid. They came with red, white and blue paperwork with the same old song and dance as to how these presidents were so "mysteriously" linked. Examples I remember were Lincoln's secretary was named Kennedy and vice versa, Kennedy was shot sitting in a Lincoln, yada yada. Lots of these were made and promoted in the mid 70's. The date on the coin doesn't surprise me in the least.
