Found my second Minnesota dbl die in change today. Thats 2 in about 3 weeks. I think there are something like 11+ versions known so far. I wonder what the final total will be? Whats your guess, over or under 20? here's 60x & 200x shots of each. With all the TPG now certifying them getting the "complete" set will be a very $$$ endevour.
When I first saw the articles about them I thought it was pretty cool---now there are sooo many types out there I'm wounding if some of them aren't machine doubling---all I have seen is photos of them---I've looked at some of my Minn quarters but need to look at them all. The articles in Numismatic News were really interesting. Speedy
Well it looks as tho those who voted over 20 are correct. From what I see on ebay there are at least 25 differnt varieties. (not counting the mint set versions) Is it just me or does this not make much sense? I'm not sure, but there arent that many differant 1972 cents that were produced for a whole year.yet there are upteen+ on a coin made for 10 weeks? How many dies does the mint use for each state quarter out of curiosity? I went thru about 20 last night and I found about 12 canidates (I say canidates because they don't match the 11 or so pictured on KP's website but they defenitly don't look like a "regular" one) I'm thinking the mint might be using the dies a little longer than in previous years because it seems as tho there are alot of cud, die break and assorted errors on ebay for 2005/2006 quarters. Pretty much any older (pre '05) error listings are mostly off centers and other high dollar errors. Colorados should almost be called Cudorados. I have at least 5 differnt Colo. cud errors already and Nebraska is a close 2nd. Mattman PS Congrats on your find Speedy, I'm sure it's not the last.
I just picked this one up, it does have some minor doubling that can't be seen in the pics. Anyway this one seems to tell me that the mint knew something was going on, check out the extreme die polising in the extra tree area. Looks like sun rays shining thru the trees and even down onto the water.
I also have one with that some thing....I put it back in my roll but know where it is....maybe I'll pull it out again. Speedy
Zane I don't know for sure if you can tell me this or not---but are you finding alot of these DD's?? It seems to me that these aren't really all that rare or something that is going to go up in value---the values on ebay have gone pits..... Speedy
Sorry it took so long for the reply. I have seen a bunch of these at work, and I do believe that we certify all the varieties listed on Ken's website. I suspect that in the long run, only the extra tree varieties will bring strong money.
Thanks Zane IMHO these things have and will keep on loseing money---it seems like all they do is go down any more. I'm going to take the one I found to the show with me and see if I can find a dealer that wants it. I hear that now they have a OR State quarter with DD's on it too... Speedy
Are these state quarter errors predominantly being found on the P mints, or equally among P and D? I'm west coast, and can only (easily) get the D rolls, but every roll I look through, the quality seems so much higher than the (few) P rolls I've looked through. Any opinions on P vs D with regard to error rate (on state quarters)?
Dot Most of the DD's found so far have been on P's...but some have been on D's---Here is a list with good photos---check it for listings on D's. http://koinpro.tripod.com/Articles/2005PMinnDDRImages.htm Speedy
Thanks Speedy -- what is the general consensus about why this is? Does the P mint just have poorer quality control? Not dissin' the P state, just wondering...
Yep---for along time people have said that D's are always better--now if that is because of quality control or not I can't say. Speedy
