    Hello All,

I have these proof sets 1999,2001,2004,2005 & 2006 anyway I've been talking to a few people who told me I should take the coins out of the mint packaging because they will get haze(Whatever that is) on them. My questions are should I take the coins out of the mint packaging and place them in plastic 2x2's? If I do this will the value of the coins go down instead of being in the set?

Here is what I think about should you take them out....: NO.
Your coins would more than likely get little marks on them and lower the grade---If the coins are going to get Haze they are going to get haze.....I don't think the packing has anything to do with it....but I could be wrong.

If you don't want to worry with that take them and sell them to a dealer.....the 1999 would sell for a nice price!!

I have proof coins stored in a gun safe and they don't seem to get the hazing. But, those stored loose in othe rparts of the house get a thick haze on them. Using a jewelers cloth to remove the haze is dangerous because most everytime I've used it caused scratches on the coins.

Does anyone know what causes this haze? I assume it's humidity.

NEVER use a jewlers cloth on coins! Especially on proofs! A jewlers cloth is intended for polishing and actually is impregnated with very fine abrasives (jewlers rouge). They are DESIGNED to scratch to help scrape away dirt and tarnish. Coins should not be rubbed with any type of cloth because of the possibliity of scratching especially proof coins because the mirror finish on them is VERY delicate and will show any abrasion.

OK...I went to photograph some of my "brown" Ike proof dollars 'cause I remembered that at least 2-3 of them had heavy hazing.I set up the shot and noticed the pics were coming out blue, but ONLY where the hazing is.At first I thought it was just the camera setting or the lights I use but after looking at them in natural light...they've turned a light aqua blue.
Suddenly I don't feel so bad about them any more. Anyone else ever see this?
Here is my 1971 for comparison.

Yes. most that i see or have seen have this coloration. All off mine do. I was wondering if this lowers the grade and or value of coins with this so called hazing.
